Three hightop vans in a row. Only one is an actual hightop.

Just a few notes on the performance of Pleoquin TBD. I have a ‘91 Carat automatic that I had a Peloquin TBD added about a year ago. I haven’t been in a situation where the Peloquin was “needed” although I am sure it has engaged a few times but I never really noticed it. We don’t get much snow here in the flats of NW Washington State but today we got about 5-6 inches. This was a great opportunity to put my Peloquin to the test and see if it really made a difference. I have just regular all season tires 27x8.5x14 and I didn’t put on chains for this trial. I was really impressed by how well the Peloquin worked. When starting from a stop it kicked in right away and the van moved forward with both rear wheels doing the driving. I pulled into an unplowed parking lot and tried to make a tight turn around and lost momentum and came to a complete stop. If I did not have the Peloquin I would have been totally stuck. As it was it took me about 10 minutes to get out. It was an interesting lesson in angular motion physics. Because neither tire had any traction when I put it in drive the back end would slide to the left, in reverse it would slide to the right. Remember the “right hand rule” of angular momentum. So I sat there sliding left and right until one of the tires would get some traction then I would move a few feet (sometimes it was forward, sometimes backward) eventually I got enough forward momentum to get out of the parking lot and onto plowed roads. I had to really be careful (soft touch) when accelerating or both rear tires would break loose and the rear end would start to slide left. I think with chains, or at least good snow tires it would have been fine. So to summarize my trial: the Peloquin definitely works but to be effective at least 1 wheel must have traction. _________________ 91 Carat, automatic, GW 2.2, GW EFI, Peloquin TBD

Damn, lets hope the winter grip relaxes soon!
Oh, and dig your wipers out first... like the car behind you. Vanagons tend to just end up with their wipers twisted on their shafts, to straight down. Reminds me... I have 3 Vanagons outside, I better go look to be sure my wipers are still sticking out.

EDIT:
Well what a Chub..
I chiseled out the wipers.. on 2. The DoubleCheese Bus is in a more difficult location to get at. Maybe tomorrow.
Would have been a much better shot if I'd found the wipers flipped out and all that purdy snow on them, like I should have been ready for.

Digging the car out is about the only thing I don't miss about living in Chicago anymore.

Good gravy, I've been waiting years to post on this thread.
We finally got enough snow in Texas to merit a post.
Presently, we have 6" of snow and have been below freezing for several days. More freezing rain is expected in the coming days.
We are without power now since 1:30AM Monday morning (it's Tuesday night now).
You all would be proud of my van. Its LiFePO4/solar/inverter setup has been powering my home furnace blower until this afternoon, when my house solar panels were finally uncovered and came into play.
Now the van is charging our devices, and acts as a backup shelter. Since I've gotten the home solar to run the furnace, we're doing fine today.
Still no refrigerator. Our groceries are tossed into the snow outside the back door.

My brother in Pflugerville actually got more snow than us in Tulsa... Crazy weather days.
Sorry to hear about the power. But it sounds like your Vanagon is picking up the slack. Way to go! _________________ JesusV

Portland snow and ice event. Source say largest power outage in Oregon history. Guess we won’t have that Columbus Day storm in 1962 to push us around anymore. Joking aside. A lot of people are still out of power. Five days without water, power, heat was bad enough. I feel for them.
These pictures were from the first night. The second wave added much more ice.
