If i remember right the my mirror's were mounted on the hump. then on the bottom mounting points had large rubber pads to level them out. |
Thanks for the info on that.
For the sake of it I bent my mirror brackets so the pivots are on the same axis but the mounting brackets are nowhere near a right angle. This is an interesting challenge because they are so hard compared to the mirror brackets.
This is also why I went secondhand (beside the price). I don't want to go messing up something shiny and new. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). Motor: Nippon 1.8L Single port Wasserboxer, Transmission: 3 rib 002. |

I just got a set of 60's corvair greenbrier van mirrors that (with a little tweaking of the lower bracket) should fit my bus nicely.
I have always thought the aftermarket truck mirrors were nice, but they were too new and stick out twice as far as they need to. The greenbrier mirrors set closer to the body and have the vintage appeal that buses need imo.
I am on the road and unable to post pics, but this is what they look like:

I will be whoring out pics once i am back home. _________________ Champagne Edition Roadtrip monster "Juakali"

Here are mine. They were already on the bus when I got it, otherwise I would never install them. But, they work well, so they'll stay for now (I'll replace the rusty hardware at some point).

these are the mirrors I will be restoring, then installing. They are off a Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier Camper van. (easier to say bus)
If you look at how they are constructed, I believe I should be able to bend that lower arm up slightly to meet the stock baywindow mirror screw mount. I will be removing that 4-point bracket and just using the vertical bolt/ acorn nut. the top I will either screw in or rivet, though I imagine with some creative ingenuity, one could fabricate a clip (like a peep mirror) to hold onto the upper door lip thus providing an option to have a truck mirror, without drilling.
the best part imo is how close to the body they are. I discounted truck mirrors since they typically stick sooooo faaaar out, but these (as you can see) can be adjusted quite close to the body, and are endlessly adjustable. up/ down/ near or far... Hell. I might even get some big convex mirrors to bolt on below them! lol. Plus, they are VINTAGE! they could have been slapped on there when the bus was new.
Also, somehow the greenbrier and the baywindow have similar mounting distances, so the mounting bar remains perfectly vertical!
the top mount is a 2- hole arrangement:
with the bottom bracket removed from the Chevy mirror and that bottom angle bent slightly more, it should be able to bolt directly to the vw screw mount. No holes!

I sent off year before last and got the real nice replacements from WW. The right side mirror never would stay in the correct position and one day last month it fell off while my wife was driving to work. Needless to say it was ran over before she got back to it. I see the Brazilian mirrors in my near future.

Funny that this is such a popular mod. My 77 has the stainless mirrors, though I'm severely dissatisfied with the quality of the arm and the screw mount. The metal seems too soft, and frankly hasn't stayed well since day 1.
I REALLY like the idea of the Brazilian mirrors, though I'm a BT concerned in aesthetic. White I'd likely plasti-coat them in pastel white to match the bumpers.
Does anyone have pics of their late bay with the Brazilian mirrors?
Thoughts on them, pros, cons, review? _________________ Mike

Look in my gallery. I've been running them for years and will not switch back. They are heads and shoulders better than the Chinese metal crap that won't stay adjusted and even when they are perfect you can't see crap.
Lets just say I rarely adjust Brazilian mirrors and I haven't backed into anything yet. Visibility while driving is great.
I like the idea of plastic coating in an off white that matches the L90D. I'm fine with the black and have been taking my bus in a different direction with wheel color and headlight bezels. _________________ James

I'm sold... they look much better "from the drivers seat" in the pic above than I anticipated.
I just called bus depot to order some other things, but these are out of stock for about three weeks to go.

that is a nice picture - and makes me consider doing the same. ill probably take one last crack at getting mine to HOLD their position, but when it's time to replace them this seems like a no brainer.
it's hard to get over the looks of the things, but for a safety item like this, I think I could live with it. |

Im not totally against the look. They certainly dont look BAD.
I half wish they were available in white, though after seeing these mounted there, Im not completely against the black either.
Its going to be a few weeks before I get mine, Ill post up some detailed pictures when they come. _________________ Mike

Looks good, did you cut them down at all? I cut mine till the bottom arm was snug up to the elbow. I may cut mine down some more & get them re-threaded. _________________ '71 Hightop - rolling resto/customization in process

I had that style of mirror on a box van. Great for sight. Bad for slamming thru your drivers window if someone crosses the line in a big truck. Glass all over the cab, in my ear and luckily, not in my eyes! _________________ 78 Riviera
