remember that his center carb leans out to zero as the two others richen up to compensate
as per what the owner stated earlier.
and the other two dont pull in fuel until later in the revs. _________________ Happyasshell

I think it might be the gasket under the glass bowl. I notice that when it stops, there are little airbubbles perculating up from the bottom of the bowl at the base. What I don't understand is where the air goes, because when I start it in the mornings it's completley full?
BTW my mileage is now about 25-28. Not too bad considering that I had 30-32 before. The only thing that is a slight pain is that I have to change the paper air filters on the velocity stacks everytime I refill the tank. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

Actually it's working out great. No major problems. I still get around 28 mpg and it's very smooth. I sure get ALOT of questions about it at car shows. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

Well yes and no. My engine's picture, the description of how it works, was in the magazine BUT they made the mistake of saying it belonged to another person, Albert, who has an awesome 57' vert that was parked near mine. So now he has to explain to people what happened to the Tripower that Hot VW's Magazine said he had in his car! Maybe next year Hot VW's will get it right. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

where did you learn on how to use the carbs that you did? Just from experience or some online place? or how did you know that tillotsons, and a solex would work? Just a lucky guess or is there some math involved? I was thinking about doing the same thing, but with a 1600 dual dport. Also how did you know to use the jetting and all that stuff? _________________ 1974 Super Beetle: Custom resto in progress

Here is the thread go me started...
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=156308&highlight=tripower
The carbs I found by looking all over the net. All I had was the picture in the thread to go by and eventually found what they were. Then it took about 1 year to finally locate them, got them rebuilt, and ready to install. They have a 25mm venturi which match up real good to the 48mm Solex. As far as the jetting, the hardest part was finding out what the best air correction jet to use in the Solex that would make it lean out at the higher rpm's. Once that was done then the Tillotson's could then be adjusted to add more fuel when the Solex leaned out. It's been mostly experimentation and time to make my Tripower. I've been very happy with it and don't think I will ever go back to stock. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

That is so cool. It s so neat to see something "original" in this world of copy cats. Even if it it is not "stock"
Props for having an idea, engineering it, implementing it, tuning it and making it work.
Now all you have to do is make up the phoney, black and white "Tri-Power" ad with photoshop to look like it is from the 50s!! _________________ John Henry

Thanks for the kind words John, it's been both scary and fun working on this engine. I think I will make some sort of decal to stick on the engine somewhere. Something that people will know what it is?! _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

Bugman you are soooooo right. I forgot that I have to install one of them Okrasa oil line coolers that is placed in front of the fan air intake, I guess that will be a project for the winter. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

Wow. neat work! I would never have found your story without the new Vintage Speed link. Sounds like it is a true driver. If you ever want to compare the systems actual performance with other hi-po 36ers take a look at the 36hp Challenge.
Happy cruisin...........

X2! That looks awesome, I cant believe you actually got it to work, and it even sounded a relatively painless job to synchronise it all!

Thanks Burly, yes it is a true driver, I put about 4k miles a year on my car. I was thinking of doing the 36hp challenge, I only live about 90 miles from Goliad and the Texas Mile, but, since my car is a vert I thought I would have to put in a roll bar in my car and I don't want to do that. Maybe next year I will go for the fun of it. _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"
