Nice try but Halibrand KidneyBean 5's didn't have 5-ear caps, and Mg Hali's light up a bonfire much better than Al. _________________ I contend that we thinking people should,

those spinners were threaded and they're not called caps.
5-ear center caps screw on and look dildous

Okay. You're picking nits. Obviously, the design was borrowed from Halibrand. The originator.
By 40 or more years. |

Yes, thats a given... and I assumed common knowledge in this forum.
All I asked was which of the new ones came first.
Salt Flat Specials or Speedmasters ?????
So I'm sure you know that Salt Flats are 2piece and can be custom ordered in a wide (and narrow) range of sizes.
My ponder was only thinking of saving Eric Vaughn some time and me some $$$ _________________ I contend that we thinking people should,

Hahahahaa Guess I was too dense to pick up on the sarcasm! To answer your question, I don't know. But, I'd bet the American SFS's were first to the scene. Oh. And what's a little time AND money when you can have the Master Eric massage your wheels?! |

I was just hoping they were designed w/ structural software that simulates the " Structural Optimization of Aluminum Wheels".
Then I could assume that the mounting surface was made beefy enough to take a lil' machining.
By machining down the lug mounting surface (inside of the front wheels) I could offset (tuck) them more than the 21mm they come with. Then have Eric take an inch off the face and the suckers would really tuck-in nicely, even w/ a stock width beam.
The folks at MoonEyes were no help w/ the structural software question... and that had me wondering if A/R designed the speedmasters for them. One would hope that A/R would have the best of structural softwares..
Because if they were designed with something like Catia or Maya then its all guesswork. _________________ I contend that we thinking people should,

It's no shocker the tech guys didn't know. Tech support usually means, they know what the wheels will fit and what finishes they are available in. I really wouldn't be surprised if AR did the engineering/design on the SM wheel, but I have no idea.
That's one thing lacking in VW aftermarket wheels, front to back differential. As in, the wides go in the back and the pizza cutters up front!
Good luck. |

those American racing wheels were out long before the speed masters... I can remember inquiring about ordering them in Porsche pattern thru MOONEYES back in '05 or '06 |

Here is my car on them. IT's not quite finished yet but you get the idea. I had the lips polished on them and the centers refinished.

here is the rare 4 lug version, they only made 50 sets for a shop in Japan, this is most likely the only set in the US as MOON originally passed on the 4 lug version...
for 14mm lugs you can use the vanagon ones, perfect lenght an taper...

I am just about to order some of these for an early 60's Ghia and was wondering if anyone could help me out with what the best offset would be.
Standard beam at this stage, any advice appreciated. |

Thanks, that's just the info I need. I think the stance is perfect! This is the look I am going for on my 63 project. Are they mounted with studs or lugbolts? _________________ 63 Beetle
