|
|
Hey ya'll! treating my 66 Westy to many new brake parts and found that the spring clip holding the star nuts in place is gone and the "ears" which held it down are fubar (PO hammer job). The question is how best to reattach the new one so it wont fall in between the shoe and drum some day. Tack weld?? or what-------the clip is apparantly spring steel and the adjuster unit ,bolted to backing plate, is cast iron..... compatability issues?
anybody got suggestions having done this yourself?TIA,Paul _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |

spring steel will not hold a weld to other types of steel.
I usually just replace the whole backing plate, although someone else might have an easier solution. _________________ .

on my 67 camper they were rivited on. I drilled out the old rivits and used pop rivits to hold the new ones on. Worked good for me. |

I assume you're talking about the rear stars. These were originally peaned in place. I usually clean up the old peans (I think you called them ears), slip a replacement in, and pean it in place. |

From your comments, do you mean the ones at the rear? Like in the link below:
http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211609185A
If so, yank out the old ones, use a dremel or hacksaw blade to "refresh" the grove it slides in. Tap it a new one (the ones in the link above don't fit, I made my own). Once it is in, use a chisel and peen down the edges of the groove down over the spring you just slid in. |

All of my springs, front and rear, are broken off. I've been driving without any for quite a while...the adjusters have never moved. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

That does NOT sound safe. Any time I do a brake job, I run a tap and die through the star and the adjuster so they move like butter. That combined with anti-seize ensures I won't have to fight stuck adjusters anytime soon. |

I wasn't sure about it at first. But, I use a dab of heavy grease on the threads and they stay put. I check them often. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

Thanks to all! I think Ill give some attempt at refurbishing the peens and trying to reattach as per original. Im working on the presumption that the engineers put them there for good reason, so I dont want to go without them. Although it is considerably heavier,i have found that the F+R drum brakes on my 66 Chevyvan work hard to make a stop. and with a VW single master cyl. system, I want no chances and best efficiency possible! _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |

A ghetto way to get you by is to bugger up the brake threaded clevis part slightly with plier marks prior to insertion. Just to enough to create friction but not enough to keep the star from turning. |

Beautiful.
One of Clara's buses had a broken off star and it always was backing itself down. I fixed it at some point and the problem went away. I for one am a big fan of safe, reliable, good working brakes and do my best to keep them functioning as they should. |

Isn't it more of a V shape in line with the long axis of the spring? _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

On the rear springs, yes. Looks like he's making one ton front springs. |

I do, but I don't remember the adjuster springs looking like that. I'll pay attention this spring when I grease the front bearings. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Bay drum brakes are basically the same as late split. _________________ Why buy what you can build.
