I'm not sure where the heater valve on a Vanagon is. But here is how I addressed a similar problem on my '78 Bus with TDI motor.
I had installed a similar shut off valve in the back, and was using a slightly modified factory heat exchanger cable to control it.
The problem was over that long cable, it was a decent amount of pressure to close the heater/valve and the cable bent up at the dash, similar to what you all are seeing.
To solve the problem, I got a spring at the hardware store and added it to the arm of the valve to help pull it back to the closed position. Now it opens and closes with ease.
So it would be a matter of going to the hardware store and finding a spring that is the right length to be under a slight pull when the valve is closed and read a spot on the frame or body or someplace for the other end. _________________ Dave Cook
