I got a set some months ago to install on my '74 KG 'vert
as does my friend Bob on his '68 KG coupe.
Very nice work, John...
If you were @ the First KG East Coast Treffen last year
at Stone Mountain, you may have seen them installed on
Bob's '68 coupe. _________________ ****************************

John (Moxon, not you, Copello!),
Look up any miscellaneous photo of an AC Cobra and you'll see what these wind deflectors look like, and do. _________________ David Ruby

Hey guys....bringing up a dead topic. A close friend of mine just scored a set of the repop driprail mount wind deflectors which appear to have never been mounted on a vehicle....Is it true these were a very short production and not easy to get? I want them but he wont sell em to me...haha _________________ 1957 Lowlight

I think I still have a set of original wainting to be mounted on a car. I won't use them for my car and I am willing to sell, if you are really interested
The originals need drilling andare not the clamp on types _________________ Dutch Karmann-Ghia and coachbuild lover.

OK still on a Ghia learning curve here...so I'm going to ask the obvious questions, what do they do, and what do they look like in situ?
I can guess from the topic title "Wind deflectors" that they...ah, deflect wind. but is this to cut down wind noise or increase weather-proofing in wet conditions etc. |
These were pretty popular back in the days of side curtains. on touring cars/phaetons, and roadsters. It's true they helped keep anything airborne (rain, bugs) off you and allowed a modicum of turbulence and noise to be blocked out. They were really handy for getting through brief periods of light rain as well. With the appropriate clothing you got slightly less wet than if you stopped to erect the top (much less the curtains!).
They fell out of favor with the rise of the cabriolet/convertible coupe with roll up windows (and where applicable, front window vents) and inherently better weatherproofing. The roll ups did a much better job of silencing and keeping stuff out of the cockpit when the car was open.
"Wind wings", as many call them here, are still somewhat useful with the top down- but mostly aesthetic as having the roll up windows up is a better solution. They go much better on a Model A or MG TC.
Frank Costin, of Lotus fame, had the ultimate solution for the roadster/touring car. He despised the noise and turbulence in his wide open factory Seven, so he used his aerodynamic experience from designing cowlings at DeHavilland and installed a sort of "wrap around" wind deflector that not only attached to the sides of the windscreen, but also to the windscreen top. Pretty ungainly, but quite effective... |

Anyone care to take a guess at a fair market value for "style 2 wind wings", the ones pictured in the first post of this thread? They are rare but where does that place the value? I believe even reproduction units from John Copello are rare. I only recall seeing one or two sets of originals offered for sale in the last seven or eight years.
I have a set I was considering selling. But, if they are that rare, I probably should hold onto them. I believe John Copello's version were approximately $200. Please correct me if I am wrong. |
