I have a quick question, would a beetle 1500 engine work in a 68 bay as long as i had the mustache bar adapter? Would it be able to push it along well?
thanks-Kyler _________________ 68' Westy Weekender

Can't see why it wouldn't work with a 12 volt flywheel on it.
Just don't expect to pass anyone. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

You think i could at least cruise at 60 on the freeway if i tuned it up and did some bolt on things? The reason i ask is because i'm looking into a 67' bug with a 1500 in it but i have my 1641 for that bug and was wondering if instead of spending money on a new 1600 for my bus, just put the 1500 in it. _________________ 68' Westy Weekender

Hate to state the obvious - but stick that 1641 in the '68 and the 1500 in the Bug! _________________ '71 Westy |

Would, but the bug will be my daily driver, the bus will be used for camping and weekend trips. I had the 1641 in my daily driver bug now and i love the torque it has for everyday driving. _________________ 68' Westy Weekender

well the only difference between a 1500 and a 1600 is pistons and cylinders, isnt it? Just asking because thats only 90 bucks or so to swap. _________________ [email protected]

The 1641 has thinner cylinder walls. The extra weight of the bus could cause it to overheat and slightly warp them which will shorten the life of that 1641. I'd keep that engine in the bug. |

my 69 bug i used to have had a 1500 in it with single port heads and it had some balls, ive never had a 1641 but i liked the torque the 1500 had. |

I believe the 68 was a 1500 single port from the factory. _________________ ☮️ |

No it wasn't. 68 was the first year that VW offered the 1600 for buses. _________________ 1968 Deluxe "Clipper L" Type 2

What was the bore? I seem to remember the 1500 being 83mm. My mistake. _________________ ☮️ |
