It's a shame you and everyone else with a bus in North America except me and about five other people are in California, because (shameless plug) I have a great complete running engine out of a '77 in Classifieds that would swap in like butter. Shipping is nuts though.
Good luck, and Welcome to TheSamba! _________________ Your car may do 0-60 in under 5 seconds, but can it sleep 4 and cook a meal?

It would be nice to know what you intend to use the bus for, how much you have to spend, and if you are willing to get dirty. |

in answer your questions, wildthings, the bus will be a semi-daily driver, i can scrape up a few grand (more time, more money...) its not something that i need to do right away, its more of free time thing right now. and im more than willing to get dirty.
thanks,

have you thought about attempting to rebuild the motor you have? _________________ "...theres nowhere to go but everywhere." - Kerouac

You can buy a longblock here:
http://www.avpworldwide.com/
and install it yourself.
Or you can take your bus to Bugformance in Sunnyvale, and they will buy a longblock from the same company and install it for you. This will cost in the neighborhood of $3500. They'll do a good job for you.
Or you can buy an engine kit like this one:
http://aircooledtechnology.com/store/product.php?productid=16852&cat=309&page=1
Not cheap, but when you're done you will have a really nice engine and you'll understand how it works.
You could also buy a used engine and hope for the best.
There are other options.

If you wanna go the already rebuilt route you have a few options.
Aircooled Technology
Boston Bob
Bus Depot
I'm sure there are more out there but it is up to you what you want. If it were me and I could save up the $$ I'd go with a Camper Special from Jake Raby at Aircooled Technology. That is just my opinion from all I've read on here about it.

You'll heva eht engine that VW should have created for the bus...
More power, cooler running and better MPG all in one package that is designed to parallel or exceed a bone stock engine's longevity..
We just broke RAT history yesterday twice with a new "Super Camper Special making 108 HP and with an exhaust swap to our new header it picked up 9 more at 117! The torque was a whipping 132 lb/ft!
Thats a solid 50% more power than a stock 2.0 "VW" Bus engine.. With the same displacement we make 50% more power. Thats what a decade of development on a single combo can do!
Detailed info on the 08-09 engine kit program can be found here
http://www.rdtlabs.com/Presentations/ratenginekitprogram_files/frame.htm
And you can assemble it without anything more than a 100 piece Craftsman tool set! _________________ Jake Raby
