I love those gauges.......I have a couple. One with a Mercedes and one VW logo on the case and one w/o the case. I have seen sell for around $250 in perfect condition with case. With prices now.............it's anybody's guess. Confused

They also are different with regard to how the increments are marked on the gauge. As for year, I think late 50's........early 60's, but that's only what I have been told. (no real proof) Sad

As Bob said, they changed as the years went on, and tire pressures got higher. This can be seen in these catalog pic. The first is from a 1955 catalog, and the 2nd pic is from a 1966 catalog.

For me, it is the condition of the box. The gauges can take lots of abuse. Only a few I have are actually worn. But, the box can not tolerate any mishandling. In fact, my daughter managed to screw up a perfect red Messko labeled box for me and it was just sitting with the rest of mine in my office. While on the topic of labeling, they engraved what ever you wanted. Besides Mercedes or VW as Bob above states, I have seen BMW and Borgward too. In other words you will see many different ones. The VW one above is the first VW one I have ever noted.

The picture of my collection is now about 4 years old and I have added more since. It illustrates that the boxes came in several different shades. We have not yet figured out if it means anything or just the dye lots changed over the years. Can you tell which marque of car I am mainly interested in?

Just picked up a lb/ sq inch Messko Tire Pressure guage. Anyone know the dating of these?

Looking through accessory catalogs, it seems they sold a similar guage through the seventies.
Though the guage is small in most pics, seems mine looks closer to the one in the 1960 catalog than the others, FWIW:

I picked a a reddish bakalite gauge that is only in pounds...no metric. It has a grey plastic sleeve and looks to be in near mint shape. I can't find a reference to the bakelite in standard measurements only. Any idea how I can date it?? It looks identical the old school tire gauge that came in the 356 tool kit.

I've bought this Messko Ballon tyre gauge.
The website https://www.356tools.com/messko_gauge.htm dates this particular one back to 1952 till 1956.

I got my Messko back after being refurbished. I had a watchmaker who wanted to repair this gauge.
The problems it had after 70 years is that the piston was stuck and the rubber was gone.
