Gotta wonder why they wouldn't just delete the tranny and hook up the motor directly to the axles, maybe use a reduction gear like splitties, get more height. New batteries are lighter, too. Also be easy to make a 4wd! Use regenerative braking. Who's going to do it?

I'm jealous, congratulations!!

Don't mind Notch, he gets a little aggressive about cool new finds sometimes Razz

Pulling the pic until it was on your trailer is always a wise move, there's snipers everywhere, you never know.

What a great find!
Do you have any history on it, or details on how it got lost in the woods?
I'd love to see a dedicated thread for it.

Probably because building a purpose built gearbox for a short run of vehicles would be cost prohibitive.

The way the TVA vehicles were set up had the trans locked in a single gear, I think third of fourth. There is no shifter or clutch pedal in them.

From what I gather the previous owner bought it off the street in arcata, ca and towed it home where it sat under a tree in the woods in Humboldt. It was last registered in 03. It has duel sliding door. The interior is also rally nice. It has 11k og miles and other than surface rust it very clean. It appears to be complete minus batteries. I kinda wonder if it should be in a museum. I'll try to post more pics

I think almost any auto museum that features foreign cars would love to have it. But, if you get it back on the road and actually drive it that would be equally as cool. Not sure that would be possible utilizing that stock technology though. As long as it's restored/preserved most of the VW community would be happy. Smile

So that's the one that's been rumored to be lost somewhere in the woods of Humboldt County since at least 2008 -- nice save! I think you might get some interest from auto museums since folks here have already consolidated some paperwork, background and photos for you that show the program and testing.

I bet that restoring it to run on full original electric would cost a lot and would take quite a bit of re-engineering, but that would be the coolest thing to do with it. The only other one known with the TVA paint got converted to a 1600 and lowered. Confused

Here's an electric vehicle museum though it looks like folks are donating vehicles.
http://www.hevf.org/

My two cents (for whatever you care) I normally like to see stuff kept on the road, but I would flip it over to somebody who will shine it up real good and put it on display. 1 of 10 made, 5 panels and 5 passenger. It really is a unicorn.

An article I found:

Hmm, I'd sacrafice my treasure chest for some batteries and an electric motor. Once batteries and capacitors get better at holding charges.

There's a guy in Hawai'i selling a complete setup for electric conversion of a single cab, from batteries to controllers to motor. I can dig up that info if you need it.
