It was cool to see Richard Williams driving (I think) a 74 deluxe in "King Richard" which is on HBO Max now. —Really making use of the 7 seater capacity with the 5 girls in back and his wife. Googling for a shot I found this comparison to the real bus he owned. They talk about the attention to detail, but the real life being a jersey looker, I am like "nah". The bus in the movie was really nice actually
|
In the middle photo (Mr. Williams' actual bus), did you notice the right rear wheelwell's shape was cut, and what looks to be a wire spoked rim fitted (Jersey Look details)? Front wheel also looks like more outward offset. Fog lamps on the front bumper, and the top of the front bumper has upward bumps? So the movie bus is overall generally well done. |

Sightings in some "Dirty Harry" movies, filmed around the San Francisco, California area.
"The Dead Pool", 1988 starring Clint Eastwood as police inspector Harry Callahan. All photos are from the chase where Callahan and his detective partner Al Quan are being pursued by the black Corvette Sting Ray remote control model loaded with explosives. Its "driver" is in the brown Chevy Monte Carlo.
"The Enforcer" 1976. Beige Deluxe in background, with Squareback parked in front of it. This is the "mayor attacked at the drawbridge" scene, who is a passenger in the Cadillac in foreground.
Red Deluxe Bay parked down the street. Callahan is in the brown Plymouth, about to ram into the liquor store where the gunmen are holding a woman hostage.
A green Bay drives past the antagonist's van.
"Sudden Impact", 1983-
"Magnum Force", 1973. Teal Bay heading north on US 101 just off the Golden Gate Bridge. |

In the movie "Sheba, Baby" (1975) there's a Sierra Yellow '71/'72 Deluxe Bay Window parked, at very end of movie just before the closing credits start. Filmed in Louisville, Kentucky.
Well known American actor James Garner (Maverick, Grand Prix, The Rockford Files, and so many more) was a car enthusiast and versatile, skilled amateur race car driver. He created his own racing team American International Racers (AIR) in the late 1960's. Garner produced, and narrarated the documentary "The Racing Scene" in 1969 of his car life. Dark green Bay window bus in background at Sebring driving by racer David Hobbs.
Movie "Double Trouble" (1984), filmed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Stars Bud Spencer and Terence Hill. Two, and moments later one Brazilian-built Bay airline bus are seen in left background as the stars come out of the airport terminal. The Brazilian buses could be considered the "Zwitter" equivalents of split window Beetles, since they have the Bay window front body design but the Splittie side and rear window layouts.
They are driven off in a white Rolls Royce, which turns into a side street going the wrong way. There are at least 5 Bays parked on the left and down the street.

At the very beginning of Woodie Allen's movie "Manhattan" (1979), filmed entirely in black & white in New York City, an early Bay window drives by. The "overpass" in the background looks like the High Line raised railroad tracks, which ran through the west half of Manhattan and has meantime been converted to a public park.
Blue Bay window single-cab pickup, German movie "Der Tote bin ich" (I am the dead one), 1979.
Brown/white late Bay at a Los Angeles, California intersection, movie "All of Me" 1984. Main character Roger Cobb (Steve Martin) is driving the grey Rabbit Cabriolet.
Ivory Bay window panel truck, movie "White Lightning" (1973) starring Burt Reynolds as Bobby "Gator" McKlusky. He drives a brown Ford LTD with 429 cu. in. engine; filmed in Arkansas.
Rear of a Bay in town, "...Lightning". Or is it a '67 Splittie? |

James Bond movie "The Man with the Golden Gun" (1974) with Roger Moore as Bond, his 2nd such role after "Live and Let Die".
Blue Bay parked in background, with Bond riding in the British Secret Service Hong Kong local agent Goodnight's (Britt Ekland) mustard yellow MGB roadster.
Dark early Bay window, with Soon-Tek Oh as Hip from the Hong Kong police, and Bond at right.
Yellow Bay window in background of traffic circle, Bangkok Thailand. Villain Scaramanga's gold AMC Matador Coupe in center foreground, with his henchman Nick Nack as passenger (Christopher Lee, Herve Villechaize).
Beige early Bay parked at left, Bangkok car chase. Bond is driving the red AMC Hornet with chrome Cragar mag wheels; passenger was J.W Pepper (Clifton James, the Louisiana sheriff first seen in LaLD) who was vacationing in Bangkok with his wife and happened to be in the AMC dealer's showroom car as Bond takes it to chase Scaramanga.
Blue Bay parked at far right, Bangkok car chase sequence. |

Police Academy 2 opening scene |
notchboy, this is quite a coincidence- just this past weekend I watched this same movie and took nearly exactly the same 2 screen shots, though as usual I enhanced mine slightly as to brightness. I was planning on loading them into my gallery this week- but you earned the initiative. I have many other Bay window movie/TV sightings ready which I'll load this week, and throw a few here and there into this thread over time. |

The 1979 movie, Time After Time, takes place in San Francisco, so there were many VWs to see. Here are three Buses I saw.

Just spotted another- in the first few minutes of "Back to the Future II", when they take off in the DeLorean, there is a Bus on the left side of the screen. |
Here it is, a '73+ dark green. Note that it is parked farther down the street from the neighbor's driveway in the first shot, and seconds later is closer up-
This early segment is supposed to duplicate the end of BTTF I, but the Bay in the 1st movie is an early ivory one, and parked consistently up the street from the neighbor's driveway which matches my 2nd shot above-
IMDB lists the location as 9303 Roslyndale Ave, Arleta, Los Angeles, California. |

There are several vintage shot of VWs (including at least one Westy bay, and a bunch of bugs) in the new Three Mile Island documentary on Netflix. Lots of filler footage of Middletown PA around the plant.

I saw that Bus recently! I was visiting my aunt down in New Hampshire, North Hampton to be specific, and her neighbour owns that bus! It's currently for sale again, except now it's listed at 19,000 (I contacted him and apparently his lowest would be 15k, might be worth it?) Crazy how prices have skyrocketed in 8 years
It looks super clean and has NH inspection sticker. Apparently it was custom made for the movie, so it's not the usual run of the mill weird aluminium camper conversion. Very interesting bus. The interior is wood panels with just a bed, no camper equipment _________________ 1973 Westfalia named Angie
