My friends type 4 1800 twin carb engine has developed a knock, ive got no idea what it is....

Its not big end but maybe a lifter on the way out? Cam bearings?

here are two audio's of the engine idling.

Sounds a bit like cam noise to me.

Try disconnecting the belt and see if the noise disappears, if not, adjust the valves. If the noise is still there it's time to open it up.

Sounds like a rod to me. Might be wise to shut her down until you can split her apart. Better to be safe than sorry.

When you adjust the valves look at side play in the rocker arms. May have broken a wavy washer or something and now your rockers are clattering around.
