Damn,$150 for just the lock??? I'm only asking $100 for my complete assembly WITH the key!

I've sent a PM to Alan and offered to purchase his lock and column, hopfully he'll sell it to me and save me alot of time. I'll check with WW to see if they sell just the rubber and let everyone know. I'll also be checking with Gabriel to get my lock fitted for the K style key to be somewhat correct. I have all current ignition, doors, vert hood lock, and deck lid keyed alike to a K series key.

67 Vert-
There you go... You don't even have to contact Gabriel. Bill May has what you need.

Now I need more technical info. I contacted Alan and he has a lock and column for sale. I need to know if this will work in 67 Vert??? His ad reads as follows.

Locking steering column Price: $65+shipping
I have a locking steering column out of a '63 euro ragtop. The column works like new,and the electrical portion is NOS. It also has the correct key.
Price includes the lock, electrical hookup, column, tube, and key;everything you need to install in your '60-'65 beetle(paint it black and it would be correct for a '66).

I think I need some advice here - Bill May, 67Delux or Critter1

Thanks in advance.

Yes it will work in your 67 vert.
The column and tube will fit. In order to make it correct for your year, you will need to paint the lock housing black, and change the keyed portion to the smooth 67 only type (which Bill May says he has).

Here is the difference:

This appears to be for a 66 since the lock housing is black and has the words surrounding the key hole. 58-65 lock housing would be an off white color.

67 only. Notice the smooth ring surrounding the key hole.

I have a 66' Euro bug with a locking column. I had to drill out the shear bolts, not as easy as it sounds, but I did it. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has a cylinder with the words on it that they may want to sell. Mine works great, but it is badly pitted. Thanx....

I was looking at this schematic:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

and wondering, can you remove and replace the key cylinder without removing the housing. There are a couple screws on the back of the key cylinder. My key is stuck in the run position, I can turn 45 degrees to start position but can not turn counter clockwise to Lock position so I can remove the key.

have you rotated the steering wheel so lock pin engages? key will not come out if pin is not extended same as newer cars.

Try using the GrabIT bits. Probably the only thing I have seen on a TV infomercial that actually does what they say it will. Maybe some penetrating oil from the top to assist too . . .

yeah it's pretty strange, The key will rotate 40 degrees clockwise to start but will not rotate counter clockwise to lock so I can pull out the key. The wheel rotates freely, just cant get the key to go into lock position. I have been soaking with Liquid Wrench for a couple days I will try again tonight

I have the same setup on my 67. I'm having problems with the tumbler. I turn the key to start and it doesn't spring back to the on position. To replace the tumbler and/or the ignition switch do I have to remove the steering lock?

so looks like the issue is the switch not the tumbler. Airhead parts sells the switch

part number: 111 905 865 EBR

Its easy to change out, just unscrew the two screws on the back of the switch.
