well guys, I have stepped over into new territory. The wife and I decided to purchase a Ghia that we can work on together. She has always loved them, and I want her to be more involved in Aircooled cars, so this will do it. Some of you may recognize it, but this is the new project.
I any of you guys happen to have any of the missing parts, that you would part with, please let me know...

at the moment, the plan is to go back relatively close to stock, may be slightly lowered. Its original color was Cognac, and we will be going back with that. The wife likes the two tone schemes, so it will have an off-white top. she wants to go with a tan interior with red inserts in the seats... It should look nice. not original, but nice none the less... _________________ M J Markham

You can; however it will take time and patience. Check out all of the stickies at the top of this forum regarding vendors. I can tell you right off that House of Ghia is going to be on your speed dial.
How do the pans look as well as other rust prone areas of Ghias? Those hubcaps aren't original, but they look nice and I bet you could get a few bucks for them at a swap meet or selling them here.
Overall, it looks like you have a clean slate. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

from all the information i have, there is really no rust in the car. there is a little in the battery are, and when I say a little i mean a little...
I am very optimistic that the car wont be that hard to get on the road. _________________ M J Markham

That's the critical piece right there.
How about under the rockers, behind the mud plate (which is behind the front wheels), under the nose, etc? I'm thinking you're golden in all of those areas, but having seen a lot of Ghias in various stages of rot and damage, I want you to be aware of specific areas.
Again, great score. _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

from what I am told, the rockers are good as well as all the wheel wells, and inner fender walls... I am getting the car from a guy that I believe I can trust with giving me the straight talk about the car...
I think it is going to make a great project... _________________ M J Markham

I have been doing a lot of reading through thread here and as many places as I can find to educate myself to the ins and outs of the Ghia... although there are lot of similarities to the type 1, there are a great number of very unique things that i will have to deal with... interesting cars... _________________ M J Markham

Great that you and your wife will tackle the work together, even if she just sits in the garge and hands you a beer while you are getting dirty on the car. Wishing you lots of fun with it. Definitely try to get it running and registered so that you can drive it, before tackling the bodywork. Having a running car boosts your enthusiasm alot, IMO.
What engine is in it? I notice that the rear engine tin that closes off the engine to the body to the rear of the crank pulley is missing; don';t drive the car without that tin- the engine can overheat!
The rust in the corner of the battery area is minor; I had alot more there on my '64 Ghia that also had its battery there. For a low-buck repair panel I used the battery patch panel from a Beetle. It had similar depressions and outlines. You could buy one of those and just cut out the corner to graft into your body. See that diagonal line from the corner of the decklid opening, cutting across frontwards? If you patch the area, don't fill in that line- it is an original graft line from the factory. Many cars smooth that line over to cleanup the engine compartment but it is not "original" look.
Your Ghia sits just right at the moment; I would not lower it anymore. Keep those wheels (porsche 356 repro's) along with stock VW hubcaps for now- you might like the look. |

Nice project! I wish my '67 was that nice. I pulled the trigger on the first one I saw at the ripe age of 16; I learned the hard way. I am now 33 and just started to restore it!
What part of Houston? |

Cognac is an absolutely gorgeous color on a Ghia!
With the interior as you describe it, that should be a real looker. |

thanks, so far I see very few problem area that will have to be dealt with. I know that some of the things that are missing are going to be a challenge, but that part of the game and ultimately will all be worth the effort... _________________ M J Markham
