Curious who else also has vintage scooters? Have got a mint (2100 original mile/paint) 67' SS180 shown at the link below, and I just finished a resto on a white 64' GS160. The VWs are fun to drive but the scoots are a blast, and the local scoot scene up here in the northeast is really interesting. Any other owners out there, other models, projects going, etc?

I hope to visit that shop actually late this spring, they seem to have some nice models available time to time. I regularly visit Javaspeed in Providence RI since they live just 5 minutes from the in-laws. They have a really nice shop and retail operation with great people, I get stuck there for hours sometimes. Worth the trip up just for the coffee actually. Their website:

yeah not sure what gives with the headset. also the tail light isn't quite right and the sidepanels and fender look later and squared up. we might not have gotten the correct link. |
Actually the 67' US spec SS was the only year for the round headlight and whats called the rear "tractor" taillight, which makes it the rarest SS model. I asked the same question when I got the lead on it and then did some resource checking before heavily plunking down what was necessary to own it. I much prefer the round headlight over the trapezoid style, but I much prefer the earlier standard SS taillight over the tractor taillight, not sure why they changed the taillight since the earlier ones were so much better looking, havent' come up with that explanation yet.
The SS was the transition scooter from the earlier rounded out GS to the later models, there was a styling trend starting in the mid 60s for what you called squared up cowls and the front fender, started with the SS model. Side by side I prefer that classic wasp styling of my GS160 though, but the SS is a notch up in speed. I sought after these two models since the engines and their parts were basically easier to stock spares for. Carbs are jetted a little different, and 20cc more displacement for the SS.
Will try to post more pics when I get the time to host them somewhere else so I can link them in.

This forums site is decent, but not organized nearly as clean as here, but its considered one of the biggest vintage scoot forums:
http://www.scooterbbs.com/bbs/dcboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=10
There is also a vintage VW forum there, as there are quite a few VW and vintage scoot folks out there.

i sold my gs about three years ago i kind of regret it now as i am pretty sure i will never get a shot at another that nice. although i do know were a 150 is of the same vintage i might go pick up. some of the u.s. spec lighting swaps were awful also when they put the allstate badges on things there seemed to be a tendency to add crappy taillights. |
The GS models are the most sought after, either the 150 or 160, easy to understand when you look them over, even as the large frame, they are almost the perfect blend between form and performance, even if they were slower than Lambrettas. Just partial to the Vespas for their cleaner lines, and 60+mph on my SS or GS is fast enough.
If you know where that 150 is you should try to pick it up, if its the predecessor GS150 to the 160, thats actually considered the model to own. I sold a 59' VS5 GS150 last month that I already regret, I know it will be a needle in a haystack finding another.

Yep, 1961 Vespa VNB 125. Imported from Italy and redone here by me in 2001. I left as much original paint and stickers as I could. I really like that I never have to worry about the battery going bad. Let it sit 4 months, pull choke, kick twice, go riding. What could be easier. 8 inch wheels at 45 take some getting used to though. I like 25 much better! |

i used to drive a 1963 vintage lambretta, but it was only 5 years old then.
i bought a 1965 a few years ago and some day might get round to giving it a repaint etc and put it on the road.

I never owned a Scooter but I worked for a company back in the late 70's that did exhaust emissions testing for the EPA and they had 2 Lambretta scooters that needed mileage put on them so we could check the emissions again after some wear and tear was put on them. I was one of the 3 guys at the time who drove them around to put some miles on them. When I started the job they were drivinga rooute around town within about a 2 mile radius of the company warehouse. There was lots of traffic and stoplights to wait at so the miles were going on really slow. After about a week I grabbed a map and showed my supervisor (who lived out of the area) an alternate route that took us about 5-7 miles away from the warehouse on higher speed, less travelled roads. Over the next 2 weeks we put more miles on the scooters than they had in the 2 months before I started. One of the unmentioned benefits of the new route (and the reason that I chose it) was that it took us down to a 5 mile stretch of the Pacific coast highway where we got to oogle the girls in their bikinis. _________________ In pursuit of superior handling!
