Hey I need to replace the vacuum advance on my 72 bus, and am running into the problem of finding a replacement that is both working and seconhand, as I am a poor man.
Is says number 925 on the arm.
So anyway I face the dilema of tracking down a used one that will cost $20 or so
Or, I have been looking into the Bosch 009, which I have found at a local yard for $35 , but I don't know enough about it to make a wise decision.....
Just what are the pros and cons? Because Muir's book hasn't failed me yet, and he really talks highly of these things in the pages......
So any info would be great.
Oh yeah the engine is the stock pancake engine dual solex's etc........

You will be money ahead in terms of mileage
and performance with your type IV motor by buying a new vacume can or a good used one and staying with the stock dist. vs an 009.
I tried an 050 with a pertronix and then went back to the stock dist. with a pertronix and the vacume advance hooked up
to both dellorto's and my bus runs great.
If you want some of the professionals opinons,check out www.type 2.com on vacume
advance dist.
Good luck, Phil |

Hell, I'll sell you my *German made* 009 for $20 + $5 for shipping. But you really want the stock one, not an 009. |

What is the VW number on the distributor you have in your 72 bus? What you have for the vacuum unit is not for your 72.
The 925 number is the last 3 of the 10 digit Bosch long number, 1237 121 925. The long number has been replaced by the short number, 07 113. The 07 113 vacuum unit fits 1973 type 2 buses, 1700 manual trans.
Bus & Pickup 1973 * 1700 Manual Trans
Distributor: VW 021-905-205J, Bosch 0231 173 009 or 010 > 021-905-205N, 0231 181 005
Can Use: VW 021-905-205N, Bosch 0231 181 005
Vacuum Can: 07 113
Timing Set At:: 10deg ATDC @ 800-950rpm w/strobe, vacuum hose(s) connected
Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum: 7-12deg Adv, 16-18deg Ret; Centrifugal: 9-14deg @ 2000rpm, 21-25deg @ 3400 rpm
Your 72 should have dizzy number:
Bus & Pickup 1972 * 1700
Distributor: VW 021-905-205E, Bosch 0231 173 005
Vacuum Can: 07 101
Timing Set At:: 5deg ATDC @ 800-950rpm w/strobe, vacuum hose(s) connected
Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum: 8-12deg Adv, 11-15deg Ret; Centrifugal: 13-16deg @ 2000rpm, 23-26deg @ 3600 rpm
The vacuum unit 07 101 is 1237 121 885 which means it should have 885 on the arm. This one is for 72 1700 and 73 1700 Calif auto trans buses.
Take a look at the intial timing and vacuum retard figures of both of these vacuum units. 5 degree difference..... Setting timing by the book specs is only valid IF you have the correct parts installed |
