I'd love a dual air cleaner set-up. Have any pics or a site that has them for the other stuff mentioned? _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Check my ad on "Military 181 for sale". I have pictures of the radio installed, etc.
Add to the list a set of "wee waa" horns on the front bumpers that worked in conjunction with the parade light. There was an additional switch on the dash that operated the light only, or light and horns.
I have all but the dual air cleaner and gas cans on bumper (I do not believe the gas can setup was ever a military option), nor have I seen the dual air cleaner setup installed an a documented military 181.
I have everything else on mine, but would still like to find a reasonable prised blue lens. _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

maybe I'm on the wrong thread... I would like to know how to time a military 181 with a water proof ignition.
Just got one _________________ 1967 Split SO-42 Dormobile |

TDv 2310/001-30 has a nice little description of how to time the suppressed ignition. TDv docs may be found here (warning-knowledge of German and automotive German terminology is required).
There is a description for timing the ignition statically using a test lamp and a description for timing dynamically using a timing light. I am not sure how well an inductive timing light works on the fully suppressed wires, if at all. I've never played with them and don't know specifics of the suppression to be able to give a theoretical yes or no. The TDv description seems to indicate that one needs an adapter to use a dwell/tach and another adapter for the timing light. _________________ "I like how everyone likes talking about Zeke's Thing yet he's the only one that's ever seen it." - Katie

Hello Xavi, nice to see you in the Thing forum.
There must be a misunderstanding, because the military ignition is NOT water proof, but electrically shielded. Military things were meant to carry radio equipment and the distributor is the best radio station you can get
About timing, there is no issue here, work out as its a mechanical advance dizzy (like a 009). Advance is 7.5 degrees statically.
People use to drop this dizzy because cables tend to get old and malfunction. Getting new military cables is a nightmare. A system with red coil is also more difficult to maintain. Replacing the military capacitor is impossible AFAIK.
So a general advice would be, get a 009 and a blue coil. _________________ Aug '58 pressed bumper SO23

Replacement military ignition parts are out there, but they tend to require a lot of $$$ (well more than your standard vw ignition components). One typically has to expand the search to European sources (including searching e-bay from other countries). Some German vendors that specialize in 181 parts that I know of might have some parts; I can get you their contact info if you are in a bind. A couple of them know English quite well so language is not a barrier to worry about. _________________ "I like how everyone likes talking about Zeke's Thing yet he's the only one that's ever seen it." - Katie
