|
|
My drivers seat is shreded and it has pinkish/orangish wires on it. After looking around I saw wires coming from the bottom. I then noticed on the steering column is a adjustable knob that has a diagram of a heated seat. it has a few settings (I think 1-5). So my syncro has heated seats that do not work. does anyone have a way or vendor that can fix them or give me hints.
I do not have the bentley yet or an owners manual. I am familiar with air cooled vw's but I could not pass up a deal on this syncro. I am still waiting on parts so I have not even driven it yet. That is why i never noticed the adjusting knob on the steering column.
I also think it is imported from Canada because it has canadian stickers on the drivers side door panel
Thanks in advance _________________ 86 bostig SYNCRO

I don't have an answer, but your heated seats seem to be very rare. I have them on my Tristar doka, but they don't work either. Simce I live on the CA coast I haven't bothered to fix them
Anyway, Lucas at GoWesty checked out my doka at last year's Syncro de Mayo and flipped when he saw the seat heater switch on the streering column. He'd never seen one before. That indicates to me that they are very rare. My doka came from northern Sweden so the seat heater must have come in handy.
It seems any good mechanic who is good with electronics should be able to fix it. _________________ Charlie

Old topic I know,
However, I picked a Syncro a little while ago and it came with a few boxes of misc parts. Digging through it today I found a wiring harness in like new condition. Where can I find 1 heater pad? I checked most sites out and it seems they come in complete sets mostly. I have the switch and the wiring just need the part that goes in the seat. What are these worth?, just curious _________________ -Lorenzo

I bought 2 new heating pads and switches off ebay for about $100.
I doubt that it would be worth your time to source original parts.
Not all heated seats are created equal. Drive a new VW or Volvo and compare it to some of the other seat heaters (ie, Mazda, Chevy)
I'm sure the newer ones work much better than anything made in the 80's.
If you've never owned a newer car with them, get some with at least 2 on positions. On/off isn't sufficient. Maybe I'm just a seat snob. |

I agree, I had heated cloth seats in my Jeep Commander that were great. All I need is the pad. I think it has 1-5 on the knob, looks cool goes on top of the steering column _________________ -Lorenzo

All Swedish vanagons were equipped with heated driver’s seat. Usually if the system does not work the wires in the pads are broken. You can try to repair it but the wire will brake again in another place. The best what you can do is to find golf/jetta./ T4 at your local junk yard and cut off just the pads. Sometimes the relay is broken (number 59 ) which is located on the top of the fuse box, so check it first.
If you need the wirings with switch for your Vanagon see my adds. _________________ Pawel

The seat back is also heated, not just the base pad. at least my Tristar is.
It's a bit toasty at level 5... _________________ Vanagon/Transporter flares here: www.terrawagen.com

Are those rare in the States? Every Vanagon I've owned has been equipped with a seat heater.
Usually there's nothing wrong with the heater cable. In a YM 88 this what you need to check. It's a copy from a discussion we had on a local forum. The components are the same in Golf, Passat and Jetta from the same era. You can pick the pieces you need from any model.
* There's a thermistor (NTC resistor) under the seat that can fail, specially if the controller relay is disconnected. Some circuits survives a fault, some not.
* There's a fuse in slot 16 (10 A) for the heater.
* The controller unit is in relay slot 18, that's the column most to the right. |

Thanks for this, as too everyone else helping in this thread. I too have a drivers heated seat in my Syncro, they all came with this in Finland too asaik.
My seat don't work, and with only 180k or so miles, and seat in good condition, I will check that fuse.
Any idea how to check the relay? (Apart from replacing it.) |
