I bought this panel back on December 18th of last year, so I figured I would get a thread about it going...I got if from the same junkyard that vwadam's '64 panel came from. Here are my plans for it: Get it running, repair the rust damage, repaint it, build a good engine for it (maybe a stock 1600cc turbo grenade), maybe swap the tranny out for an 091, a tweed interior with a z bed rear seat, a nice sound system, and a set of repro Mahle gas burners with the bus lug pattern. Oh yeah, it is going to be slammed too (eventually with airbags all around). Here are a few pics...
Now for the bad...
Driver's side rocker rust...
Sliding door rust...
Nose/front door damage...
Camper window in the roof...
Here is a list of the rust repair it needs...
Driver's side rocker (short and long one)
Lower doglegs
passenger's side corner (from the top of the wheelhousing to the top of the taillight)
Hole in roof where camper window was
sliding door track
bottom of sliding door
portions of cab floor
the very front part of the frame (right behind the bumper)
the metal under the windshield (but I might just out a donor nose clip on it and take care of the the damage by the door too)
So far, here is the only work I have done on it...
Cleaned it out and got the shag carpet out of it... ...of which I'm sure the name is fitting...
Removed the broken camper window
and there was something else I did, but I can't remember what it was right now _________________ 1967 13 Window Deluxe

That looks like a sweet project for sure. Congrats on that find. Can't wait to see more progress on it. Keep us filled in.

*Update*
After spending a good while trying to sort the engine problems I am having with my Beetle, I decided to work on the panel a little bit tonight. I put the pulley back on the alternator, threw an old fan belt on it, cleaned up the points, and eventually got it to run...One cylinder isn't firing, and a bunch of crap came out of the exhaust...But it will run nonetheless. Now I just need to get to work replacing the ignition parts and brakes and tuning up the engine for CTS in May.... _________________ 1967 13 Window Deluxe

Man, it's been a while since I've updated this thread...I've done a whole lot to it since the last post. Let me see...I've replaced all the ignition parts on my engine, got the carb rebuilt by Keifernet, painted the engine tin, cleaned out the gas tank, painted the tranny, and cleaned up the bus a lot more. Right now I am in the process of replacing the rear brake stuff and all the brake lines. Hopefully here in a week or two I will be putting the engine back in it, and then moving on to the front brakes. Then I just need some new tires (which will be $500 for a set of 5), and I will be ready to drive it... _________________ 1967 13 Window Deluxe

Shop around on those tires. I'm sure you can get a better price somewhere else. I bought my tires for my vert and bus from discounttiredirect on ebay. They are the same guys from tires.com but their prices are a bit lower and I was even able to haggle with them over the price and they beat everyone else's prices and shipping was free. |

I really need to put some new pics up. The whole passenger's side rear corner was full of bondo and had just been resprayed tp hide the damage to it, and I scraped a lot of it out to see how bad the damage was. I have another '71 to cut up for the metal I need to fix the panel, but I need to get some more welding practice in before I tackled that part. Once I get the repairs done I am just going to have some Neptune Blue put in spray cans to blend with the OG paint. I figured it will look pretty good lowered on some white stock rims and gray hubcaps with the og paint buffed out...
It's funny about the tires, because that is the same amount I paid for the entire bus...
I will shop around some more though...The guy at tire store said they will be tough to find (6-ply 185R14's), but you never know who might have them cheaper... _________________ 1967 13 Window Deluxe

A friend of mine got some 185 light truck tires from sears or Sam's and got a good deal. Next time I see him I'll ask how much he paid and what exactly he got. |
