1972 Bus - 1.7 liter Thermostat

The bellows type thermostat is shot on my engine (fully expanded) I was told a much less expensive Type I thermostat will work on a Type 4...
Is this true?

Forgot to tell you. MAKE SURE you get the 80-85 degree model for the type4 engine.
