paul, i replace the windshield rubber on my bus a few months ago. with an extra set of hands and some patience the old double string method worked fine for me. just remember, 1, extra set of hands,2,a small amount of lubricant in between rubber and most important 3, patience and no beer until its done.

forgot to mention, read sean bertnicks article in the library at type2.com. i printed it off for reference while i worked, and it was very helpfull

We make a simple "Lubricant" of 1 part dish detergent to 3 parts tap water. Just as slippery as silicone spray and INFINITELY faster and easier to clean the glass with.

But you trap water between the seal and body.
Silicone does not cause rust.....
