I used orange ones (JBugs #113129729B) when I rebuilt the 1600cc engine in early 2017, so four years so far. I left the factory 1971 black ones on in case these leaked and I could slide the old ones over.

I read a little and silicone or urethane should cope better in an engine bay. Rubber will be brittle more quickly and so I have ordered a set of those too.
