Well I finally got a wild hair and decided I was going to gut the interior of my 87 vanagon gl and do the sound deadner. I have read all the posts on the sound deadners from other members. I have decided to go with either the peal and seal or frost king on account of budget among other things. Plus it will get me out of the wife's hair for awile ha ha!! But I will let everyone know how it turned out I am sure it will make some type of improvement.

I hear yea, I'm hopefully putting the heater back in the dash this weekend. I spent last weekend pulling it and putting some sound insulation in. I've got the van in a car port but it's been snowing slowly all day and I called out from work and got the electric heater going in the van right now.

I need to finished up replacing the flaps and I'm done.

If your going to be doing it in cold weather a heat gun really helps.

Probly have to break down and go buy a heat gun. I got the whole van gutted the good news is I didnt find any rust when I pulled the carpets. I sure hope all this work is worth it. I did the whole heater thing your doing a couple months ago I should have done the sound deadner while I was in there last time. I was so fed up with pulling and putting the dash back I didnt fell like working on it anymore!!

I would think you could find a heat gun these days for less then 30.00. If you've got a harbor freight in your area then less then 20.00. and it will really make bending it a lot easier if your going around the glove box and under the seats. You really want to insulate area's where inside and outside metal is a singe piece. Wheel and foot well.

I put sound insulation in a few years back and did most of the van other then the dash since I didn't need it out at that time. There is not question you will notice a difference but I think some people are more impressed then others and I think it depends how tight you van is before you start plus it's something you have to work on over time.

The felt window scrapers in the groove around the front windows make a big difference. In particular the one at the leading edge. I replaced them last year and was amazed.

I remember one of the posts I read was written by an acoustic engineer who thought the majority of the noise comes through the wheel wells from road and tire noise. Are you doing anything in the wheel wells? The carpet glues right to the sheet metal in these areas so anything done needs to be underneath. I wonder what you decided to do in these areas. Thanks.

Do yourself a favor and install a pergo type wood floor while you have everything out, it's really easy and probably the best mod you can do for the interior (IMO)

What I did was pull the carpet and factory insulation up. Then put down sound insulation 1/8" ish, then a 3/8" foam with hard backing. Then put everything back. I had play with things a little due to the thickness around the peddles but I was really happy with the outcome. I repeated this process in the rear over the engine.

The center area I put down a wooden floor so I didn't add as much insulation.

Since then I've seen spray on sound insulation that can be sprayed into the wheel well and used like undercoat. I've not tried it but have read positive reviews.

I plan on doing the entire interior of the van that should cut down some of the road noise I am hearing. Also I am planning on cleaning under the wheel wells and spraying some more under coating. That should help also. I am debating removing the dash again to put the sound deadner behind dash. Dont know about that one though. This is looking like it is going to be more then a weeknd project ha ha!!

So then, which one did you go with, peel and seal, or frost king?, and how many feet do you figure to use?

Holy cow! That's way more than I did. I did all the door panels, back hatch, firewall, and behind the fridge/sink/watertank. I also did as much as I could reach on the rear quarter panels. I did not do the floor since there is a lot of insulation material already under the carpet. The only noise problem I have now is wind up front. Since the rain gutters extend all the way down to the bottom of the windshield on the Vanagon, I was thinking these rain gutters create a lot of wind noise.

I went with the Peel & seal it was not to overly priced and I seen some other people have used it on here with no problem. I may have went alittle over board with it but who knows maybe it will be alittle quieter. So far I have went through 2 25ft rolls of it just doing the front. I have to go back and get about 10 more rolls tommorrow. Think that should be enough to do it but might not be. Also am throwing the old insulation away and getting the insulation in the seal bag.

Im wondering why everyone is doing this, is it because they all have AC therefore they always have the windows rolled up? My westy has no AC so my windows always rolled down, i drown out the "noise" with my crankin' 300watt stereo when i need to. But im still curious, would a westy owner without AC see some improvement with the sound insulation mod?

I am sure you would notice some differnce. I dont have ac in my van at this time I just did it to see if my sterio would sound any better also so I wouldnt hear the road noise as much.
