That can't be right! My 1973 VW 1600 Type 2's former 1584 cm³ displacement engine, had 50 DIN HP (i.e. hamster power)!
All these 1968~79 VW 1600 & 17/18/2000 Type 2 engines, and not one of them features a manual, cranked starting handle! Am I the only one to have this useful feature!?! _________________ Regards.

So Nigel has a crank. What, too lazy to push? _________________ Never drive faster than your Angel can fly

Of course I'm too lazy to push! All good engineers are intrinsically lazy; or so I was told by my esteemed senior colleague, way back in circa 1979/80. It's what prompts us to design ways of making our lives easier.
Besides which, it is rather difficult to push-start a vehicle solo, whilst simultaneously sitting in the driving seat, steering the vehicle and waiting to engage the clutch in 3rd or 4th gear, once the vehicle has attained a reasonable speed.
Once upon a time, nearly 26 years ago, in southern Sweden, during my family's 1982 summer touring holiday, I was obliged to perform a reverse rolling start in reverse-gear, down a moderately steep hill. It was quite exciting, but it's not something of which I would wish to make a habit.
A starting handle, is even more essential, for those who drive 1972~79 VW 17/18/2000 Type 2 automatics, which cannot be push started at all! _________________ Regards.

I sold the original AD-series (equivalent to AE-series), twin-port, 1584 cm³ displacement, 50 hamster-power, 1973 VW 1600 Type 2 engine, with retro-fitted starting-handle facility, sometime ago.
I have yet to assemble, the WO-series & AP-series 1911 cm³ displacement, 90+ hamster-power, modified hybrid, VW 17/1800 Type 2 & 4 engine, with retro-fitted starting-handle facility, so the only pictures I have, are of some of the various components.
Renovating the two-bedroom bungalow, which I inherited from my grandparents, is taking precedence at the moment. _________________ Regards.
