PostPosted: Tue Feb 26, 2008 1:45 pm    Post subject: Wooden Tires? Reply with quote

I was talking to an old German fellow recently, and he started going on about how VW's and other German cars were shipped to the dealers in the late 1940's with wooden wheels (actually curved wooden blocks) instead of rubber tires because there was a tremendous tire shortage in Germany back then. The dealer would sell and install tires when the car was sold.

I've never heard of this, but it does make sense that it would happen, and this fellow usually knows his stuff.

Can anyone confirm or deny this, or does anyone have a picture of VW's getting shipped with wooden tires?

I vote urban legend, what would VW do throw 5 tireless rims in the back seat?

Sorry... couldn't resist.

OK, laugh, but I remember that the post-war American cars came with wooden bumpers because of the chrome shortage and then you took the car back in to the dealer and he installed the chrome ones when they became available. (well, I don't actually remember it, but I did hear about it)

Don't believe what Bob tells you.....if I go to buy a car and they say hey we are going to charge you for chrome bumpers, but you get wood ones now, but come back later and we will give you chrome....that's where I'm not going to buy my car from.

I think Bob told Moses that he can trade his wooden ship in for a steel one after the first month.

I am pretty sure I saw a set of wooden wheels from a Kubelwagen in the Grundman collection. Christian will be able to confirm this.

Here are such.
I took the pics on a little military meeting wich is held every year close to my place. I just missed the last one.
These are possibly the ones that are now at Grundmanns. Christian bought them if I remember it right.

Now that would look real interesting in my spare tire wheel with some nice wood stain and varnish.

If I had a flat the ride home would be a little harsh especially now that we are entering pot hole season.

I'd say a chisel and a hammer along the seams....

There is a steel rim on the outside of the wood rim, similar to a cart wheel. Maybe you took the steel rim off, then dismantled the timber.
