Pretty simple and cheap improvement:
I replaced the bulbs in the front (amber) turn signals from clear bulbs to amber bulbs.
Now, my front amber turn signals are more amberish.
More amber = better (since, frequently, the lenses are faded)
I replaced my side marker clear, incandescent bulbs to red LED bulbs. Now, my red side markers look much more red. More red = better.
Total cost for all four bulbs? About $1.00
(Pro tip: buying Chinese stuff direct from China is much cheaper than buying your Chinese stuff through a USA middleman) |

Replaced the seat belts with retractable ones - don't work as smooth as I'd like.
Put up a couple of assist handles.
Tried to replace the visor holder, but how in the heck do you put a screw in, when you have to have the visor in there already? Do you have to take the visor off at the side, screw in the holder, then replace the visor on the side?
Did a little measuring in preparation for installing my auxilliary battery. Looks like I'll put in a holder, then go through the firewall to hook up to the main. Since I'm mounting under the rear seat, I'll also put the fuseblock and Bluesea ACR under there.
Rear brakes need love = the right has a bad master cylinder. Parts just arrived, not sure if my skill level is up to it... (heck I couldn't replace the visor holder!) _________________ "Not all who wander are lost." JRR Tolkien

I've had tow Pertronix modules fail on me while on the road. Both were quickly repaired by the set of points in the glove box, once the issue was diagnosed. That took some time..

It's very rare that you see folks report breaking down due to points or condensers unless they were negligent with their servicing. In 3 decades of VW ownership, I've never had an issue w/points or condensers.
Now, I LOVE the idea of those electronic ignitions but I simply see too many people report them failing, causing a breakdown. Even if you do carry a spare distributor or points and condensers, with today's heavy traffic, you just know the module would burn up in the worst possible spot on the freeway, potentially causing an accident. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I think anything man made can fail. I have the Compufire electronic ignition on mine (see pic.) Works beautifully.... and yes the module did burn out at one time, luckily it was not while out on the road.
However (in a different Bus) I also experienced a set of points break at the spring. Leaving me stranded. Lesson learned, always carry spare points etc.

I have over 200,000 miles on my Allison (Crane) electronic ignition. The only time it ever failed me was when a outside wire broke. I fixed it quickly. The best improvement to the car I have ever made. Plugs last twice as long.

Electronic ignition is excellent, for sure. I just noted that I have had two different aftermarket systems fail while on the road. Neither of which I bought and installed, they came with the vehicle/engine when I bought them.
I would consider the Crane or Mallory ignition systems in the future. But for now I'll keep using the points and condensers I have stashed away.
BTW, I had a condenser fail once many years ago. I have seen broken contact point springs, too. _________________ nothing |

Got my middle seat back from being reupholstered to match the others. It's probably been 25+ years since this was installed in the bus. She's come along way:)

Took off the Westfalia decal from the front that the PO had put on when he refurbed the bus.
I like the cleaner stock look for a Bay, since the Westfalia decal was only on the front on Vanagons.
Also:
Built dividers for my under seat storage. The best part is that now I can pull out my coleman stove from the front without raising the seat, and not have to pull out all the stuff that used to just be piled in there. Also keeps my tools accessible in a removable tray and helps organize everything! |
This is inspiring. Mine becomes a sloshed around, junk drawer of tools and random camping items. But, where do you put the tent poles? |
