Looks a lot like the #4 in my 63 Westy when the 40 horse gave up back in 1993. I still have the piston with the offending valve head glued to it as a reminder.

Scary!!!

I just installed my new engine in my bay, but wanted to share a trick. I am working without a lift, and always struggled to get the engine into the engine bay with it balanced on a floor jack. So I went to harbor freight for $15 bought 4 swivel casters and welded a 3 sided square tube frame. Welded the casters on, and now have a omni-directional cart for engines. It made the install so much easier, I'm sure I could have done it with the dual carbs in place if I had tried. Also, since it's 3 sided you can simply slide a jack under and jack the engine off the dolly.
Weld one if you have the ability!

Metal Goodness. USA webcam and lifters. German Crank, 10/10 under. Honing cylinders, waiting on a case bolt anti harmonic damper(the funny looking white things in the gasket set). Fresh tube of Curil. Many parts sourced form Halsey Automotive in Portland, OR. great bunch down there. Picked up some new piston pin circlips, and some oil filters. They have Air Cooled Oil in stock(zinc)

I gave my bus a new camping trailer. It's a 1971 two wheel all state trailer I found on Craigslist that I brought back to life. It's got all our camping stuff packed and ready to go. Glamcamping at it's best lol.

Doing things on my "while I'm in there" list, as part of my engine rebuild.

I Followed Telford's excellent tutorial and fixed my fuel tank sending unit. Cool

After a while, working myself on my project I finally went through the painting stage; rewiring everything back is next, will be a pretty damn challenge.

Well other than the 500 mile break in period I deem the camper done. I will always be doing something to it of course but the blown up engine disaster is behind it. I took care of a few things while I had "Ol Blew" apart. some you can see, many more you cant. Beyond the rebuilt engine and what it required I also did the following;

Replaced all external oil lines and relocate spin on oil filter mount and oil cooler fan thermo switch.
Repair fuel vapor recovery system.
Repack CV joints and replace axle boots.
Reseal transaxle replace "hockey stick" and fill with fresh gear oil.
Remove gas tank. Remove and repair fuel gauge sending unit.
Install serpentine belt system on motor.
Modify new header exhaust system to fit the flanges on my heater boxes.
Strip and repaint the new exhaust system with high heat paint.
install new side mirrors.
install new side step. (I ordered this a few days before the engine went south.)

May as well order one for the other side. I ran through a mudhole and the step threw us sideways.
Here I had just dropped the motor for a new top end build, when my parents came by and she snapped a pic. I was breaking it in, while opening and running a store behind me, when it happened.

On my 71 camper I have the classic 71 westy cross over pipe for the sink drain and a I also have a set of Addco sway bars on it too. Just like the EMPI sway bars the rear bar hangs pretty low. Have not hit anything yet in 15 years. I'm more worried about bashing the side step into a curb than it being the cause of the bus getting kicked up out of a mud hole. But thanks for the heads up anyway. I'll watch it. Smile

Changed the inline fuse for the PO's after market radio that blew as I tried to jump the battery.

Then changed a 16A fuse that blew when the end of the wire for the inline fuse touched the ebrake brace.

Drove to work.
