Peeled off all the crappy window tint film from the PO. Still a few sticky patches to clean off, but overall, looking much better! _________________ 1979 Microbus |

Replacing both intake manifold gaskets (HP gaskets from Aircooled.net)
Also remedied (2) hex bar sleeve bushings with the addition of a single Viton o-ring (each side) on the inboard side of the bushing and wrapped the bushing with several turns of PTFE tape. This effectively eliminated the slight bushing slop I had and should hold up very well given both items used are somewhat resistant to heat.
Now just waiting for parts to arrive for reinstall. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

Got tired of losing plastic bolt caps on the bumper. Bought some stainless M8 bolts and washers, grinded the markings off and shaped the heads to a slight dome shape, then wetsanded and polished to a high shine.
Stainless is much cheaper than chrome and also won't chip and rust when you use tools, they just don't come shiny out of the box.

Looks like you got tired of the later bumper too that the bolt caps and bolts go to? _________________

I didn't drill holes in a early bay bumper if that's what it looks like. That's a late, late bumper from a Brasilian bay window. They also use bolts and caps, although not horizontally like that. |

Servicing the CV jernts on my sweet 72 deluxe. They're the originals, dated 71 and looking pretty good with 180K on them. Have yet to decide on them or a new set… Thank you Mr Tcash for all the informative links. Wouldn't be doing this without them… or my Bentley. |

Installed a new (reman) transmission from Mr. Gas.
So much quieter driving now instead of the 45 year old howler that I replaced. Looking forward to actually talking to people when they ride with me.

Sometimes I get my words mixed up, but here is my latest post for the "What did you do to your Bay recently?" thread.
My ignition switch had stopped springing the key back from the start position, so it's time to replace it. I'm ready to start the job.
I found the set screw!
The old switch came out easy enough, but I struggled a bit getting the new one back in. As I tried to move the turn signal wire bundle around, I realized my wiring was not offering much slack.
My fuse block had one of the mounting points broken off when I bought it in the 90's. Since that seems like an important part to have in working order, I got right on it and ordered a new one this week.
Knowing a new fuse block was coming, and following the age old wisdom, "If something aint broken, fix it anyway," I decided to go ahead and disconnect everything.
This is how I left things last night. Every wire identified and labeled.
New fuse box arrives on Wednesday. _________________ ~Kevin

Dahm, it took you longer to label then to disconnect
I just took a pic - several of them for when I put mine back. _________________

I took several photos to reference as well.
I couldn't get the dash cluster out without disconnecting wires from the back first. I used the photos to identify which ones went where after I removed the dash cluster. It did take a little time to label all the wires, but I feel it was worthwhile. After I clean up all the connectors, everything will go back together easily.
I had other motivation as well. I am putting in an electric washer pump, so I needed to pull that switch as well.
While it's all apart I can also clean everything up. The switches looked a lot worse when I first pulled them out. I'll clean and lube everything before reinstalling.
Of course while I am sitting there working on this, I keep eye balling that wiper assembly. It looks like it could use a little TLC as well. I have Colin's thread bookmarked already. Maybe while I'm under here I can also get a spray can of Pearl White and touch up some spots. _________________ ~Kevin

Waiting on some bits and pieces to be delivered. Might as well install the VDO Quartz clock I snagged on the classifieds.

Hello,
I put the luggage rack and pop top back on the bus. By myself, where's all the help when you need it?.
Now, Gus the bus looks like a real campmobile not a tin top...
I may have to go for a fall colors drive today. It's so nice up here this time of year, with all the colors changing. Also, the lack of tourist...
Too bad, Gus has to get put away for the winter soon. |

Hit a new max speed of 84MPH, didn't take picture proof... because that's dangerous. I had pedal left, I think ima go for 90. That'd be faster than my 97 ranger lol _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

Did a generator to alternator conversion on my 69 deluxe bus. Overall easy. Had some issues with alternator not sitting all the way back on the alternator stand. Pulled out my grinder and fixed that problem. Didn't know that you had to run your motor to over 1000rpm to get the generator light to go off. I checked my wiring twice until a buddy let me in on that little secret!

As part of the sliding door hinge refresh, replaced the crusty old beading from behind the sliding door rail cover. Turned out pretty good.
