Ok I had to "do something for my bay" on page four hundred and twenty.
So I got some 69-cent poster board and made "panels" to cover the bulkheads where it was bare paint before.
Those should get me to Illinois at least this spring.

Awwww.... Robbie....
Missed it by........"that much"..! !
Everyone knows you need to start early on 420 to get anything done.
But I do agree - that poster board should get you to Illinois. _________________ '75 Riviera - 'BIG EMMA' (Pan American highway trip paused for a make over)

Damn, that is quite the list! How does it feel to be back behind the wheel? |
With all new front end and brakes, it felt amazing!
It's been so long I can't truly appreciate all the difference, but I can tell it is much improved.
I doubt it ever felt this good back when it was my daily in 90's.
Thanks again for getting me in touch with Adam. He is great and took care of everything mechanical so I can actually get to the stuff that will make the Mrs happy
I also gotta give props to Adrian at Headflow Masters down in San Diego. The motor sounded and ran fantastic after all these years. Maybe it was just easier to build a quality engine back in 1997. _________________ ~Kevin

Front seats redone. Early TMI square covers modified to fit the later tapered frames.
I put over 225K miles on them with beat-up covers, broken springs and clips.
I started working on her 20 years ago, spent $8 grand the first year. She's been parked over 8 years.
Update: her first bath this decade, in between rain events!

Validating how much work and a pain in the ass it was going to be to remove a split-case transaxle with reduction boxes off my single cab, I put to use the ripped up moving blankets and excess 3” foam padding that was laying around in the shop to re-pad my front two seats in the Westy.
I took to the 3” padding an electric carving knife, buzzing the padding down to 1” thick pads, and did a combination of moving blanket (jute padding)/foam/jute to eradicate the springs from no longer sending pain up my back on the road. Pretty darn happy for no expense and about an hour or so of my time.
Here you can see I restuffed the front seats

With dragging ass on my post-700 mile trip service, I got around to running the valves and completing an oil change. Cylinders 3 & 4 were loose, right side was nice.
During my trip, I experienced a broken throttle cable, so I also took time today to replace that thing, which this time was a total pain in the ass. My make shift cable slide right in on the side of the interstate.
A question I have is that the brake servo up front, there is a port (barbed vent tube) on the rod portion of the brake booster with a hose going to a vented hard plastic tube, running along the perimeter of the driverside wheel well, today I replaced this MISSING tube. What a difference, the high idle at times, the wanting to stall at braking, the dieseling upon shutting off.
Who knew this thing was a vent for the vacuum system??? _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Fairly short list this time, but this is over the past week.
1) Retorque heads
2) Adjust valves
3) Drain oil, change filter, check oil strainer and replace seals
4) Fix dash wiring after I messed it up failing to install my new tach
5) Replace drag link (get stuck removing drag link from drop arm, cuss a lot and waste a bunch of time to fail in the end)
6) Buy new drop arm
7) repair steering box threads and threads on the nut for the steering box
Install new drop arm
9) Stop and catch my breath after that workout
10) Install new drag link (took 3 months to get the right boot on it after the first one was shipped with a ripped boot)
11) Go for a drive! (was it worth it? Yes! it steers much more direct now) _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

Set the timing. The engine is out of a 1978 FI Bay window. Engine Code comes up 1977 2000cc. Its been runing well, but just wanted to check it. Woody has a Electronic distributor and showed 15* and 28*at 3500 + To be safe, i set it back to 7.5* and its only getting up to 20*....any thoughts?
Other recent work:
Installed tach
Installed LED signal lights
Installed Heater fan
Installed generic turn signal control to replace broken 1977 1/2 broken unit
Extensive interior work

It's only advancing 20*? So, what you mean is it's advancing to 27.5* with the engine rev'd up to say 4000 RPM?
What kind of distributor is this? Picture of it or model number? _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

No, that's dangerous. The 20 degrees under load will cook your exhaust valves.
Put it back to 28ish degrees at 3500 and let the idle fall where it may. Timing under load is much more important than timing at idle.
Your advance mechanism is probably sticky. Most VW distributors will advance 24ish degrees. _________________ 2000 M Roadster

Thanks for the comments on the timing! I didn't get very far setting the timing back, loss of power. So just letting it stay at 27.5* at 3,500 + rpm and not worry about the idle reading. To answer your question Bill, this Electronic distibutor was on the vehicle when I bought it and don't see any markings. BUT no vacuum advance or external coil either. Any one know the manufacturer? _________________ 1974 Bay Window w/sunroof

After about 16 years... He got a deserved bath! He must have been eager for it because he decided to run, with coaxing, to get in and out for the event.
After installing a new inside sliding door handle (First new part on him!!), I actually got him to fire up with a bit of coaxing from WD40 used in the engine bay to work into screws that haven't been turned since God knows when.
https://youtu.be/wZXTQAbEfoc
I was quite pleased with the lack of dust and grime on the outside (roof looks wonderful), though the spots of rust made clearer by the pressure washer getting the loose paint off shows the honesty of the minor sanding the body needs, much in thanks (grrr) to the PO installing that side trim with rivets.
The engine is running on new gas that was put into the un-removed tank, when the PO had a shop replace the fuel pump to make it roadworthy. The engine is all original, the only two inconsistencies from normal are no air filter, and cracked vapor return lines (probably what kept it from idling).
I had created a thread a while back on him, though had it removed to make a new one later, when the project really gets underway, and as ideas have changed. Purists, you'll be happy with some of my revisions I am sure. _________________ Few will understand the passion and majesty, among the nuts and grease.

Type 4 1.8L rebuild using a '72 CB case, German standard bearings, RAT 9550 Cam w/ dual thrust, and HAM 0825 heads w/ 2.0L chambers. Len cut the steps out after 15,000 mi., as I am using dished Cima pistons, when resurfacing them 8 years ago.
I have torqued the case while hand-turning everything. First mock-up to check geometry.

Adjusted rear brakes and e-brake (I love the feeling when your e-brake handle engages in just a couple clicks...)
Got the heat working a little better, but it still sucks. It's barely a defroster. I'm guessing that my non return flaps are either stuck or have fallen off. I'm going to remove the exhaust next weekend to fix my leaking oil cooler, so I'll fix it then. Made the decision to finally install the BA6 this summer.
Made a spreadsheet with my list of repairs for the westy. Since I'm getting close to being finished with my 67, I want to see what I'm getting into on the Westy. _________________ '67 13 Window

Took the tattered canvas off a packed it up for shipment to the company the is making the new one. Also cleaned 1/4" layer of playa (alkaline Nevada desert dust) out of the pop up. There's a long way to go get, but it was big steps in the right direction. |

Pulled out my craptacular Chinese fuel sending unit (second one ) and turfed it,rebuilt my old German one per Telford dorr's excellent tutorial and it works perfect..Thanks for that!
Replaced my bottom roller wheel on my sliding door, welded in a track plate where my body guy had left a weird lip, greased and now it it pops open and rolls back on it's own almost to the catch on the rear..(I know,so close)..a little push with one finger finishes the action..
Ohh yeah, bought a really nice cover for the Bus,as he will have to live outside this summer to make room for the '56 Oval turd I will need the space in the lab for that's set to arrive via shipper any day now and will take all my time and the wealth of riches I don't have to get that little devil back on the road _________________ '68 Campmobile-Pedro
