I have always been one to pay close attention to the fine & small details that even if others fail to consciously notice, subconsciously they acknowledge that things look proper. As worn and ugly as the original aluminum carpet retainer strip and sliding door sill scuff guard were, I knew I had to address this. With new carpet, it looks as good as I knew it would.
I ordered both from www.NLAVW.com. I am still beaming from how nicely they reproduced the aluminum strip. They arrive longer than what it needed and undrilled, so they must be trimmed and drilled. I didn't trust my drill to handle aluminum and especially that I chose to countersink the screw holes, so I carried it to a machine shop.

Swapped out my taillights for the European style. Makes my bus signals much more defined and as such makes it safer. Not to mention it's now amber on a red bus instead of red on red bus.

This is classy and beautiful, especially that it is amber on red. If I owned another mid-model these days, Euro taillights would be one of the first things I'd upgrade on it. A "mid-model" is what people in my circle call a '68-'71 Bus. _________________ "The holy land is everywhere." ~ Black Elk

I thought they were just removed for the pictures. Does that engine get run regularly without them? |
Yes we have about 4,000 miles on the engine as it's pictured with no issues, we have driven some tough mountain terrain and lots of interstate driving and its still running great. _________________ 1979 VW BUS

VW put those in place for a reason. It is highly recommended to install them for engine longevity. 4K miles doesn't mean much in the grand scheme. _________________ nothing |

replaced the insulation pads that wrap around the brake and clutch pedals. the pad on the accelerator is just fine.
of course there was an unintended consequence. since i made them tight around the pedal shafts, and because the adhesive-bottom doesn't allow them to move, they squeaked like hell. i'd attach a sound file, but i don't know how.
a little phil wood waterproof grease and they are smooth and quiet. and leak-free. _________________ 1978 Champaign Edition Westfalia

Finally replaced my rear brake backing plates. Man they were rotted something bad.
Pass side rear brakes were totally fried - Cylinder bad, linings cracked and coming apart.
All new shoes, new axle seals, new wheel cylinders, repacked wheel bearings, new backing plates new brake hardware kits, new brake line on the passenger side as it just wouldn't come out of the old wheel cylinder... Not a hard job really but time consuming.
All went pretty well but be advised the brake shoe pins in the typical hardware kit were too short. I had to reuse my old pins. YMMV.

Is the drum rubbing on the backing plate? I remember having the drum machined 2-3 mm to clear the plate a couples years ago. Wonder if the issue was addressed. _________________ SEB

Ha! Yeah there wasn't much metal left holding it together.
I don't see any rubbing, but haven't driven it yet. Still need to bleed the brakes. Maybe today. Feels good rotating them though.
I did read stories of backing plate issues here - You pay your money and take your chances.
Here's the box the plates came in. VAG / EAC brand.
