Fitted a new horn.
Contacts were horribly corroded. Fitted new spade connectors and cleaned the wires up with salt and vinegar and baking soda.
Proper honk achieved.
Oddly satisfying! _________________ http://thickrubber.blogspot.com/ Writing, Surfing, and Exploring NZ's deep south by VW...

feels good for the bus to be able to communicate. _________________ 1978 Champaign Edition Westfalia

for some reason the bolt on my inside sliding-door handle keeps getting loose, making the already shaky handle even shakier.
so, i pulled an ol bicycle maintenance trick i learned from grant peterson at rivendell bicycle works, and got out my stash of beeswax.
applied some to the handle bolt, and reinstalled. we'll see in time how it works out.

The beeswax will likely work great, until that side of the bus is in the sun and it hits 120 degrees with solar radiation.
Loctite makes a purple version for tiny screws like this. I use it for many things around the shop. If the beeswax fails, try loctite. _________________ nothing |

routine maintenance every 400k miles.
the table extension in my westfalia started to loosen up, sometimes landing on my knees. so, i got a new grommet, and installed it on the bottom of the table. nice and tight now.
then, put the table back in its place.
got a spare grommet for next time.

I've used a dab of paint for the same thing. And my sliding door handle does exactly the same! _________________ http://thickrubber.blogspot.com/ Writing, Surfing, and Exploring NZ's deep south by VW...

Finally took some time to adjust the sliding door a bit as I haven't done anything to it after installing a new rubber seal last Spring. After some lube and adjusting the top alignment bracket, I can close the door with one hand again. Probably need to replace the bottom rollers/bearings but am wary of cheap aftermarket parts.
Next, install the new front door seals and take a good look at the front beam. _________________ *******************************

Made a window adapter for the CDH All In One style. I didn’t want a inside install due to fuel tank odors/spills, cabinet space take up, floor holes drilling, and wanted a portable unit for other reasons outside of camping.
Window adapter is a simple 3/4” plywood. I cut recessed the lower part of the panel to slightly recess over the window. I then added some old poptop seal to the remaining three sides.

Posted this in my thread but installed the new steering wheel and made up a custom wood piece to cover in the speedometer. Also added front seat covers. Next up is building and adding a drawer under the back bench seat.

I upgraded my tired starter motor with a powerful 2KW unit from an early 2000's TDI using the adapter plate from Westy Ventures.
I don't understand why this modification is so unknown, especially in Europe, I couldn't even find an EU seller carrying Westy's adapters.
I see only benefits to this upgrade.
- more than double the starting power
- less current draw
- better availability of replacement parts worldwide (incl. developing world)
- still manufactured by BOSCH, no need for refurbished units.
- no support bushing required in the bellhousing
- can remove it without undoing that pesky moon head bolt from the engine bay
- sounds better
Here is a video of what it sounds like before and after

Looks like a nice product. I never even knew it existed. Would be great for high torque engines and such, too. _________________ nothing |

After 13 years of camping with the stock layout, watching our kids grow up camping in it, and things we liked and wanted to change… Ive spent the past month revamping the layout to what we wanted. I know there will be some who don’t like or are shocked I cut up perfectly good stock cabinets. That’s fine for them to feel that way. Doors, drawers, water tank, stove/sink, etc were sold to friends. The goal of this for us was to open up some “confined space” and make what we wanted to change. But we wanted a change. So I started.
First was the stove/sink cabinet. We always disliked the way it sat out from the other cabinets. Even though it wasn’t much space to some, it seemed like a lot to us. I chose to keep the spare inside. We have a portable 12v Fridge and I added a slider. We never used the stove the last probably 6 years or more. We preferred to cook outside over the fire or on our portable stove.
Next I moved onto the old fridge cabinet. I haven’t had the stock fridge in it for probably 10 years. We used it for storage, games for kids (all adults now so those are at home), and spare roadside parts. I added a door to the side of the cabinet and a drawer below it.
Then moved onto the back linen closet. It was always a pain to access or store items in it. I had tried years ago for another side door. But it was still a pain to access. Plus it blocked that window view in when it was stock. The only thing I ever loved about that cabinet was the three open cubby’s. So I chopped it. Made a storage tub with top door that holds all my spare roadside EFI parts and manuals. But I kept the cubby’s.
Next up was taking about 7” of depth out of the headknocker cabinet. And making a new front face for it. Tired of hitting our heads on it.
Last was a new center console. One I could swivel the seat around without having to move the console.
Even added some old plaid I had.
I have access to a paint booth at my work. So I used it to do the staining.
I’ve also did a new wood floor in the Bus. And removed the stock stove light and went LED a puck lights. https://www.superbrightleds.com/1-round-wired-led-accent-light-80-lumens
All of this was made using old cherry desktops, birch 1/8” ply that comes with some items we receive at work, etc. We are happy with how it turned out and how much more open it all is.

I have been uptight about getting my new brown carpeted cab mat dirty, so I bought a sisal mat from Bus-Ok in the Netherlands. I'm happy and I think it looks as good as I thought it would.
