Took a couple of year break after selling my 73 Super Beetle to restore some random stuff (1969 F250, 1969 Camaro) but I am back. I had been wanting a camper and this one was sort of local and from a samba member (@EDragnDean) so I felt pretty good about traveling a couple hours to look at it and drive it home.

Dean had it tuned up super well and it cruised 55 to 60 the whole way back without a hiccup. Figured I would start a thread like I did with my 73 Super (https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=659156&highlight=) to document progress and adventures.

To Do List:
Fix horn
Radio
Fix little bit of rust in floor pans
battery tray/rear corners
finally front damage on driver side needs to be properly banged out and the door refitted.

Super clean van and I am happy to have it and get some adventuring in.

Started some exploratory cuts to see how much i needed to patch and to figure out the best way to do the dog leg, it seems fine except the upper lip where it connects to the floor. I have the proper sheetmetal to fix it just not sure how much i want to cut. Will think about it till wednesday when i have time to finalize the cuts and get everything placed in and ready to weld.

after further review i will be replacing both inner legs, when i dropped the bumper they were rusted out around the mounts.

Is that whole thing spotwelded around the bottom?

Havent had much time to work on it lately but I finish up the drivers side, got it all seam sealed and some paint on it.

Passenger side is cut out I just need to fit the panels and get that welded in.

Got the radio working and the 115 external plug setup for campsite power.

Tomorrow I need to go junkyard diving for a rear hatch cause this one is toast, check out how thick the bondo is!

Check with Ken at Bus Company, in Duvall.

(206) 523-6525

He may have a few hatches to choose from. And many other parts….

Checked out a a local upull it place, they had what was left of 3 buses and I grabbed the one hatch, there were 2 doors on the same bus that were not rotted out i may grab those. Pretty cool patina once it was cleaned up.

Further exploration on the rear of the bus, luckily im sort of okay with welding. I dont see anywhere to buy inner wheel wells so I guess im fabricating those?

Also why dont the repair patches for the rear corners include the lip for the spot welds, fabricating that is going to suck.

YIKES!
These photos should be archived and brought out every time a newby buyer says "the seller says it has almost no rust and it look good!"
