Okay, the flashback part was to get you to look....
Fumes though.
The exhaust system looks solid. No rust, no holes.
But I have to drive her with the windows rolled down or die of toxicity! Eye-watering, choking fumes. I'm assuming it's the heater channels, but any other things I might check? I'm going to disconnect the line when she gets home from the vw doc... |

| Most likely your heater boxes are rusted (inside), but you need to check to see that the seal around the engine tin is complete, and well sealed too. You'd also have a bit of a problem if you have a beetle exhaust rather than a van one, the van exhaust puts the fumes out at the side, while the beetle one dumps it right behind the bus where it gets sucked along with it and into the cabin.
