If you've wanted to use the older, cheaper, exhaust for bays on your vanagon it could be done but you had to bend you heat tubes or make your own spacers, now you can buy a spacer kit:

Saves you a little money and is more freeflowing than the stock system.
but remember no cat or egr tube.

$91 for the kit, and $200 for the 'cheaper' muffler + shipping puts you over $300 for this alternative to other Vanagon exhaust setups.

isn't the S&S header option still a better solution for the aircooled Vanagons?

I have the knockoff Empi version, and for $90 I guess I can't complain. I wouldn't get the Empi one though if you live near salted winter roads as even in nice weather it looks like it'll only last maybe 2-3 years before rusting out.

then again, every two years dropping $90 on that same system gets me 6 years of parts for the same price as the 74 dansk muffler setup.

In my experience the header Empi header lasts about 4-5 years, but I was lucky if I could get more than a daily-driven year out of the muffler. The tab that hangs the muffler off the heaterbox flange seems to weakens the casing; I had two tear open at that location, both times in roughly nine months. I got 1 year and 3 months out of the third one by not connecting that hanger tab, but if you leave the muffler unsupported the casing will flex and ultimately crack back by the collector flange.

You'd have to engineer a rubber-isolated hanger for the muffler to get it to last very long, and that ignores the fact that all of mine had a casing that seemed to be made of three layers of 28-gauge (if that thick!) sheetmetal. Plus all the time spent flattening the flanges so you can actually get the exhaust sealed ...

Good to know about the spacer kit. I'll keep it in mind if I ever have an aircooled Vanagon.
