So i'm planning on putting these together soon for my syncro. I really want the ability to have some ventilation while it rains. I know that's what these are designed for, but do they work well at it?
Thanks! |
I us mine while camping in the rain and I just close them up a bit so there is a good slope to the glass and I don't get any water coming in. |
Yep. I leave mine open all summer long, rain or shine. You'll find out what angle to leave them open at to not get rain in. They can be open a surprising amount before rain can get in. _________________ Dave O

one great thing with these is that even opened a slight amount offers a HUGE amount of ventilation
very handy in Florida humidity and rain.. w/o the wet wall and floor. _________________

Tint them while you have them out. I should have, but was more interested in refurbish and resealing them. My 68 the first time, the tint shop put the tint on the outside. They guaranteed it, and after a year ended up putting it on the inside as it should have been done. They would just be easier to tint out of the van. I never worry about rain coming in. I have lived in Fla most of my life and in the old days before home had AC, houses had jalousie windows. You left them open all year round except for maybe during a cold snap. Plus, to me, they look like they belong on the Vanagon. Post pictures when done. _________________ ☮️ |

not sure if I put this image in this thread,
but here's the inside view (my camper is an ASI so it's more DIY/different than a westy)
but the pic shows the full size ventillation and rain protection..

Dan, what is the body color lip around the window? My seal snaps around that lip as the stock window does. Are you using the vanagon window seal? Or is it an illusion? Just curious. markw _________________ ☮️ |

I just use the stock vanagon window seal,
it might appear a little different because minebeing an ASI conversion is bare metal (base model) around the window opening. no headliner or other 'wrapping' _________________

Really looking forward to installing mine this spring! It's all ready to go and waiting in the basement. If I were a little braver I would adjust the size of the other window to fit my slider! That would be the ultimate. Well that and a TDi. And a full paint job. And...never mind.

I like it for when the dog is in the van and he can't get out, or people can't reach in while he's enjoying some ventillation.

Congratulations! With the other slider, and I hope a rear set, you get a wonderful cross-current for ventilation. I'm eager to see how Winston's rebuilt sliding window works, now.

So my window is just about ready to be installed! Just want to double check, is the thickness of the stock slider window similar to the louvered window frame? No issues sealing with adding just the single spacer to fill the top/bottom? I just haven't pulled mine out yet to see what the seal looks like. _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

Not sure I can picture what you mean when you say 'single spacer'... _________________ Dave O

The lip of the jalousie needs to be thickened and widened to match the vanagon window frame dimensions and to use the vanagon window seal. The beginning of this thread are copies of the original directions that had you add aluminum to both sides of the jalousie flange. That is how I did ours, but ended up modifying the posted dimensions. I used .063 aluminum strips and silicone adhesive to bond them to the jalousie frame.
I believe Dan from NY is using some .125 or 1/8 inch aluminum flat stock riveted to the outside of the jalousie frame. It will make more sense once you start the project. _________________ ☮️ |

Congrats!
This has to be one of the best upgrades I have done to the van! We were in Newfoundland for 3 weeks this summer and had quite a few rainy days. On the days when my tarpoly failed to keep the rain off the open slider and it had to be closed the louvered window payed off!
Enjoy!
Thanks again Samba Dudes!
