Found some more time and started looking at the front end, fenderwells and the thing I dreaded the most....MUDSILLS The only place I knew there was damage on the car was the front passenger side, it got tagged kind of from the bottom and creased the quarter panel a little.
Cone is good, damage is just to the right of it
Inside fenderwell, a few wrinkles
The passenger side mudsill area looked ok, have to cut in a little metal
Top area looked good
Whoever did the bodywork last filled in the damn logo inset with bondo
The drivers side was another story, top was ok....
....but the bottom
Enough dirt and rust to fill up a shoe box
All in all I guess it's not too terribly bad, I've seen a lot worse.
Driver front bucket area
Steering, master cylinder and under gas tank looked real good
Probably have to cut in some new headlamp metal, both sides were pretty rusty
Need a little metal for the turn signals too
Um, yeah
When good seals good bad

Well after too much time the Ghia found it's way back into the driveway for some much needed attention. Me and my daughter spent a couple days taking out the pop-outs, pillars, trim, parts of the dash and rear bumper.
"A" workin hard
Inside my rear quarter panels
Rear bumper brackets
Rear bumper looks OK
Found this little kid hiding in the dash

It looks like a good solid car to start with, but i guess anything looks solid compared to what the acvw's look like in minnesota. _________________ '70 ghia

I think it's awesome that you and your daughter are doing this project together. So, the big question is, is the car for you or her?? _________________ 68 ghia coupe that was DOA - Rolling Resto

Got inside the cone area, looks pretty good, all surface rust, not even a pin hole so far.
Took out the front grills and screens, same thing.

Took off the decklid and hardware
My daughter ground down the bondo areas to see how bad it really was underneath

Spent most of Sunday (with my daughter again ) taking off every body bolt from the pan and inside the car, unbolted the steering column from the coupler, unbolted the gas tank and pulled it out, unhooked the speedo and masters cylinder lines, etc....
Inspecting our work
I'm hoping to build a frame this week to hold the body when I pull it off the pan. _________________ Tired Arms...Achy Knees...Greasy, Bloody Knuckles

Thats a mighty strong little dog you got there, supporting the full weight of the car on its head while your daughter works on it

Everything looks great so far! I always enjoy pics!
The only thing I will say is please protect your daughter when she is working on the car, gloves, long pants, and long shirt, etc. I am sure it was hot outside, but it is always better to protect yourself. A few weeks ago I figured safety was not all that important, and I ended up with 38 stiches in my knee when my chain saw slipped.

Did some final dis-assembling before I lift the body off. Found out on 68 and maybe 69 models you have a torsion Bar, sometimes called a Z-bar, that goes through the body on the passenger side only.
Passenger side bolts on the insdie of the body, still have to remove it.
Torsion/Z-bar
With that out of the way I think I'm ready to lift it off.
Got my dolley built (thanks to several of you on here)
and with the help of some of my fellow Pikes Peak VW freinds lifted the body onto it.
And my newest favorite picture
My daughter couldn't wait to get under there and start tinkering _________________ Tired Arms...Achy Knees...Greasy, Bloody Knuckles

Well it's been almost a year, sorry boys and girls, I'll update my thread.
So the next day we rolled out the pan to see what we had to work with.
Not too bad looking, no holes in the pan, mostly surface rust.
As always, Amanda my daughter was the first to jump on it.
