Tried to look this up, but there is hundreds of threads which all seem to just refer to the seat differences.
But what are the differences in the body work throughout the years?
a quick look comparison of the barndoor walk-thru and a 65 show they are quite different
Theres the obvious stripper poll, top tubing and ribs but what about the tool storage areas?
and when did these changes occur?

there are six main styles, and a few variations.

BD (stripper pole, super skinny passenger seat)
'58 only (flat partition metal, non adjustable seats)
'59-'61 (pressings in partition meal, non adjustable seats)
'62 only (adjustable drivers seat, bolt on seat rail)
'63-'67 (adjustable drivers seat, welded on seat rail)
swivelseat (single drivers seat that swivels around)(available '59-'63)

'63-'67 walkthroughs are relatively common. pre-'63 walkthroughs are uncommon.

I'm still looking for a walk thru passenger side upper seat half for my 1960 panel, I finally got a '63 type seat back but its quite a bit taller than the '60 one was, I need to cut it down but I would like to see an actual 1960 seat back frame first before doing so ... the 1960 seat backs end right about where the partition ends, my '63 seats stick up quite a bit above the partition

some great information here, thanks
Is the walkthru gap between the seats the same size in all models?
and therefore the little tool/storage compartment equal sizes also?

I've been collecting pictures of walk-thrus for a couple months now. If anyone has any detailed pictures of a 61 walk thru I'd like to see them. Especially the back sections.

I knew there were a few differences, but sheesh! I thought I had saved up enough cash to buy the walk through parts, and now it looks like I have to narrow my search to only a 3-year period Brick wall

66 RHD

Seats are like earlier walk thru seats. They hook in and are 2 piece.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Bulk head is similar to a LHD walkthru, only flipped.
The "stripper pole(s)" in this bus was not from VW, it was added later.

another variation for walkthrough mats is that they appear to be 2 different versions.
one for a panel/kombi and a second for a standard/deluxe. they appear to be hand trimmed to compesate for the mat that lines the side of the seat pedistals.

Could you elaborate a bit more. The floor mat is compensated for the seat mat? 'Splain please.

some walkthrough mats have a diamond pattern, while others have grooves running front to back.

I can take pictures of my december '58 walkthrough (59 model year) if anyone has specific questions

Does anybody have the chassis number range for the "62 only" seats?
I would imagine it is not exactly consistent with the 1962 model year...?

you are correct. the '62 walkthrough started early in the '62 model year. I don't know exactly when, but it is certainly later than the chassis number that is given in progressive refinements detailing the change (yes, PR is not always correct). a friend of mine has a '62 walkthrough with the earlier seats. (august '61 production, later taillights and turn signals, etc.)

So did they also end late in the 62 model year or carry over into early 63?
What I am getting at, is if they ended within the 62 model year, you
could essentially have three different seat styles in one model year...

yes, the w/t mat appears cut down slightly, by hand, to compensate for the extra seat stand mat material.

if you have a deluxe/std mat installed in a kombi/panel you can clearly see the difference

Can anyone confirm that all walkthroughs came with flat lower part of the partition metal (behind the tire, in the wheel well).

Not sure what term one should use for this, but it can barely be seen in this pic of a walk through:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

If this part is looked from the inside, a passenger in the middle seat would have feet in this little indentation. At least with normal bulkhead models.

EDIT:

Added this picture as well:

Pic title states that this is 65 Double Door Walk Thru Sundial.

Could there be a possibility that the height of the backrest on 62's could differ between Kombi's and Standards?
