When I bought my van, I had a mechanic make a list of deficiencies he spotted. Over time I have worked through a number of these and now I am looking at this one. The subject line is a quote from his assessment. I think this sits right on top of the engine as a firm black plastic, elbowed hose. Am I looking at the right thing and what does this do, and when it is bad what are the symptoms? _________________ 09 Suzuki SX-4 Crossover |

Your correct as to the part discription. Bad boot and hose = vaccume leaks. Hunting idle, poor fuel mileage from excessively lean mixture. _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

I believe what you're referring to is the "intake air hose" in Bentley.
On the air cooled engines, this part is NLA
On WBX I think it is still available.
If it's cracked, you can repair with "Red Hi Temp" sealant (sorry can't recall brand. common though)
Just degrease surfaces and inside cracks if poss, clean it off and apply the schtuff.
Cheers,
Neil. _________________ 1981 Westy DIY 15º ABA

man that thing is crazy looking! I've never poked around the air cooled engine or even the 1.9.

The breather hose is the hose that connects the S boot to the crankcase breather. They go to crap pretty fast. Typically the underneath side rots out so you don't see the failure as early as would be good. The thin crappy OEM hose also got sucked flat by the vacuum. Use silicone heater hose as fix, or at least Goodyear Hi-Miler hose. Even regular heater hose will last as long as the original VW hose, but that wasn't very long. |

I've never had a S-hose fail in 18 years. (the air- cooleds were a different story lots more heat under there!) The breather hose went soft on me after changing to synthetic oil many years ago. I found some US car water pump bypass hose to fill the void. I think it is still on there.

Well, I checked out my air boot this weekend and saw that its connection to the AFM was crooked and full of silicone sealer...no doubt leaky. I went to clean it up and reattach it and I can't seem to get it to attach as firmly as I would like. The boot appears to be made of a firmer rubber than what Bill W shows in this photo and every time I attached the boot to the AFM and tightened the clamp, the clamp would squeeze the boot off of the AFM outlet. I had to back way off on tightening and added my own sealant as a temporary fix, but I don't like it as I should be able to mount it without the sealant and just a good firm clamp......any tips? The condition of the boot looks good and I shove it allllll the way on until tightening the clamp but it still just slides off.
Also noticed the breather hose to the crankcase was like playdough soft and squishy and no ability to maintain shape.... I guess this is 'junk'. I will take Wildthings suggestion and replace. What does a this crankcase vent do other than connect to the intake boot? Why does the crankcase need to be vented in this 'circular' fashion?
Thanks a lot! _________________ 09 Suzuki SX-4 Crossover |

You may have a 1.9 boot on there. _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE
