I found quite a bit in my 1972 Canadian Dorper bus. It had one family owner since it was one year old and came with the majority of its camping equipment. Here are some highlights...
That emergency roll of pink toilet paper is a bit different! The batteries expired in 1986. The pamphlet dealing with Canada's switch to the Metric system was a sign of the times back then. The camping receipt is undated but is from the other side of the country. This bus made several cross Canada journeys back in the day and long trips down the US West Coast. That ugly-ass reflector in the bottom of the pic was once pasted on the rear hatch... _________________ 1974 "Restfalia" Camper 2000 cc EFI 2001-

One cool thing I forgot to mention is this. Under the back seat contained some fuel cylinders for an Optimus stove that was unfortunately missing. One day I looked a little closer at this cabinet....
I didn't realize the top was a separate piece and look what was inside....
The original stove was there the whole time! Also contained a funky gun shaped lighter and the curtains to cover the front window at night. Made my day! _________________ 1974 "Restfalia" Camper 2000 cc EFI 2001-

Bought a '78 singlecab and took it home by a 24 hour ferry ride. The bus was sitting for a looong time so i didnt even try to start it but towed it on and off the ferry with my other car. When unloading in Trieste-Italy the border customs officer started to make me truble about towing a car that doesn't have plates etc. The border customs searched the truck and found four kittens under the seat. I was afraid they might think i tried to smuggle them, but as soon as the officer saw them he strated to make noises like a little girl and asked me if he can keep them. I said yes and we were free to go on

Kittens? I can't top that but in this last bus I bought, besides the 37 years of accumulated hippie funk, I found a duck call in between the rear seat and the wall. _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Damn, volkstales...I want one of those! I have a '74 Dorper that doesn't have the passenger-side cabinet and definitely doesn't have that cool Optimus stove. _________________ 1989 Westy

I recently pulled the heater tree in a 69 and found a few items including a grip of razor blades. I vacuumed front and back in the heater vent system and pulled a bunch of crap and this tag haha.

found this when I dropped Matildas gas tank tonight, when I heard something rolling around in the tank I figured it was part of the sending unit, didn't expect this.......
how does one break a nozzle off a gas pump? and how did it manage to make it all the way down the filler tube to the tank without getting jammed?
anyone have any ideas to the age of it, I know it doesn't look much like the ones used around here now.... |

The fuel hose is designed to breakaway in the event someone forgets to remove it from the vehicle. But, the safety coupling is usually where the hose meets the pump, not at the nozzle. Maybe that's an older design? It looks just like most stations still use here in Texas, so it may not be that old. Is your bus originally from the US?. _________________ 1976 Westy

They want to hurry and get the bus outta there before another buyer shows up and a bidding war starts. _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin |

I found an hard drive with an Obama 2012 sticker on it and the name Lerner and "destroy ASAP" scrawled on it. Now I'll get audited for sure. _________________ 77 Riviera

I'm kinda new to the Type 2 world and have been lurking on the Samba for years but never felt I had anything worthwhile to contribute. Until now.
My daughter and I discovered this hidden and forgotten contraband in a 1972 VW Bus we are restoring.
The bus was left on some property we purchased about 11 years ago and my daughter Katie, now 16, has decided that old is cool, and I am to restore it for her. What a great kid huh! I assume it was last on road in 1992 because thats when the registration and inspection expired.
So Friday night we went to chiseling away the crud on the underside in preparation of pulling the driveline. I encountered some soft dirt with with a funny feel to it. As I started to dig into it I realized it was newspaper covered in dirt. I peeled away the layers and revealed something hard behind it. Thats when I discovered the first bottle of Jose Cuervo. By the time we were done unpacking it we had 7 bottles of Jose Cuervo and 1 bottle of Ron Bacardi rum. All but one bottle was full to half full.
My 16 year old Katie immediately laid claim to the cache and suggested it be served at her 21st birthday party.
The newspaper the bottles were wrapped in is dated May 31, 1987. The property I purchased is located just outside of San Antonio, TX and the prior owner had a reputation as bit of a wild man partier. Going South of the border and bringing back cheap booze is a right of passage for Texans. The problem is, you can only bring back a bottle or two. More than enough for your casual crosser, but apparently not this vans previous owner!
Two observations: The bus was probably on the road for at least 5 years with the hooch stored in the belly, explaining all the dirt and mud. How much fun do you have to have to be to forget that you loaded the underside of your vehicle full of booze? Must have been one hell of a road trip.
Katie named the bus Sorbet. Now that she's aware of her outlaw past she's thinking of renaming her something a little more mischievous. Jose?

"...the bottle was dusty, but the liquor was clean."
And the story about the kittens -- that is great. Somewhere is a momma cat all distraught. But she probably had more and got over it.
My '75 single cab is also a San Antonio vehicle that came out of Mexico, and I recently found something odd... As I was cleaning out the front airbox in order to get the "ambulance fans" working, out fell two bullets! Not used... these are two .22 caliber babies all ready to go! Those crazy Texans! _________________ John

I've found (so far)
- a lot of change
- hairbrush
- cigarette buds and complete cigarettes
- razor blade and a band to tighten around the arm... I don't know drugs that well but I think they go together, luckily nothing else of that order.
- Last will and testament
- Old 70's digital watch (not working)
- Kids jewelery (plastic) |
