I put a new muffler on my 77 about two weeks ago. I noticed that the heat exchanger has a couple of holes in it. I smell a faint scent of exhast, so I always keep the windows open. So, are the heat exchangers the possible main cause of this, or is there another cause that I'm not thinking of?
I figure I better get this fixed quick, so I fathum that I won't be able to figure out anything at all, if you know what I mean.

Exhaust can come in through:

- the heat exchangers
- where the fan shroud meet them if you are missing either of the two cover plates
- through the booster fan if you are missing the engine or hatch seal
- through the flapper boxes if you are missing the sealing colars
- via holes in the accordian tubes

If you smell a faint scent of exhaust, your lucky. Every VW I have owned/driven has more that a faint smell.Even with all the correct tin and seals in the engine compartment. Exhaust fumes go with the territory. If you smell something different than before, it may be the paint burning on the new exhaust.-Jeremy

If you smell exhaust it's because there is a leak where. It's not impossible to find a bus without any.

The tube that runs down the center of the bus has a paper liner I believe. Sometimes the smell of burnt paper is mistaken for exhaust.
