Hi,

I have a 1950 standard bug. And remember reading this thread way back in the day for some reason. So i figured i would post my finding from the other day. I needed a 16" rim to complete my set of 4 and a friend was able to provide. This rim came on a 1951 bug that was hacked up and in poor shape, but the wheel was nice. In the first picture you can see the rim was painted fully red, I noticed in heavy flake areas around the lip that it appears to be grey just like my other standard wheels. Thinking I may be able to get an OG paint rim out of it I did some cleaning on the rim.

Here after some scrubbing you can see that the wheel has a grey lip just like on my other standard rims. You can also see the center is a Coral Red looking paint.

Let me know your thoughts. I feel like it has to do something with either being a German destination car or an import.

This is exactly what my spare looks like (same exact color) but only in the lug nut area, as the car had a respray some time in the 70’s (only the exterior). Interior paint and material is original from the factory so I would have to say that my car is a pretty original example otherwise.

Problem is that no one seems to have a sure answer on a color or code. A buddy of mine was doing some work on a sealing wax 23 window bus at one point and had some leftover paint, so he dapped a spot on this color pictured and it was far from a match (sealing wax red was far more orangey brown than the coral color you see here). I might consider getting some Poppy Red from Temple Restoration and see if by chance it is a match.
