I met a guy today that has an almost totally original 1970 Ghia convertible – it looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. His original dashboard has just one crack in it. It would be great to see the dash repaired, as that would really put the finishing touch on his interior.

I have heard that a place called “Just Dashes” does really good work repairing things like cracked dashes. Does anyone here have any experience with this firm? I would be interested in any opinions.

Thanks

It sounds like a good idea. Most original dashes are dry rotted. If it was garaged everyday, it might be worth it, but if not, it will probably crack again in a different place.

In my experience with these matters, the vinyl welding of old cracked dash pads is not a long term solution wether they are Ghia, Mercedes etc.
If the dash plastic has dried out to the point of cracking, the repairer/vinyl welder can only fill the crack and it wouldn’t completely disappear there would be a definite mark where the crack was. Then sometime down the track, be it 3 or 6 months, this crack would reappear again.
This process was used by the used car industry to hide blemishes in the cars they had on sale, so unsuspected buyers would think the car was in better condition than it was.

Unfortunately there is not a long term solution to repair the dash pad, apart from recovering it in vinyl and this holds its own problems for the trimmer.

You could get the dash pad vacuum formed; this process re-skins the dash pad with a new layer of ABS plastic under a vacuum and the dash has to be off the car for this process. The cracks in the dash are repaired and then the new layer of ABS is glued over the dash under heat and vacuum.
Only problem is, if the dash has no built in metal frame the vacuum forming process can crush the dash beyond repair, if the repairer doesn’t make a solid fitted dash support to hold the dash pad in its natural state while under the vacuum pressure.

Kev.

I called them about redoing the dash in my 87 FJ-60 Land Cruiser and they wanted almost $600, so I passed!

My dash is shot, has some funky carpet over the top. Front
is nasty too. I want to take the front down to metal then paint
like a earlier car. I'm not a fan of the wood grain on the front but
I do want to try to make a hardwood shell to go over the top
of the dash and rear parcel.
