PostPosted: Mon Mar 24, 2008 6:02 pm    Post subject: 1st Drive Observation and Question Reply with quote

Hey all, after three months of installing new beam/suspension/steering, tires/wheels, shift rod bushing, new brakes and more I finally took Suzee for her first drive with me as the owner. The weather was beautiful 70 deg no clouds and perfect. She drives great, handles like a go-cart and no rubbing anywhere anytime. Got numerous thumbs-up, smiles, double-takes and the such.

Now the question, it starts great after one flick of the switch, and runs great until you are at speed (~50 mph) and depress the clutch, then it dies. Then starts right back up no prob. I'm thinking maybe too rich on the carb, or leak at carb/intake manifold?

Thanks all for the help for this newb the last couple of months.

Beautiful! Great job. I remember when I did my front beam and suspension---it was fun finally driving it. Don't know why your engine is dying but who cares? Just sit in your car and pretend!!

I suspect a intake manifold leak.

I'm no expert but I'm guessing the spike during cold running has everything to do with the roofing tar(20-50) in the crankcase.

Running too lean, stock carb ? Adjust the mixture, look for vacuum leaks and make sure the timing is not too far retarded.

Ok thanks Doc, carb is a solex H30/31 pict (stock?). It seems as though the idle is too high already, will check.

Get all the tune up specs in order especially timing and adjust the carb per the book. You have a slight lean condition and / or timing retarded.

Also......Make sure the valves aren't too tight...
Tight valves will also kill a motor while depressing the clutch, unless it's really warmed up..

Great job building the beam, exactly what I wanted. I installed the tie rods using the inner hole on the spindle for quicker steering (most driving is between 10 and 2 o'clock).
