The 2litre Air cooled engine in the vanagon.

would it, does it, resemble any of the previous types fitted to bays and such?

and finaly are the parts interchangable?

It's the same 2.0 as in the bay, a few small modifications but nothing hard to work with.
In the US vanagons only got the 2.0 but in europe you could get a 1600cc engine I think.
If you are trying to put a bay 2.0 in a vanagon or visa versa, it's a pretty easy swap.

Unless you have a 79 cali bay the exhaust is not interchangeable since it has square instead of oval exhaust ports. So if you are doing a swap between a bay engine and vanagon engine, you will need to do the exhaust as well.
