SO I am just grasping at straws here maybe someone else has had this
its a 1.9 auto for the last 6-7 weeks I have the Intermittent stalling gremlin
The symptoms
-just motoring along does not matter if it hot or cold, under load no load
(ie running for 5 mins might be 1hrs) the motor will just cut out all dash light go red, engine does not sputter, or buck its here now gone
-Tach settles down with the actual RPM (drops with vehicle speed)
-when it cuts out I hear a relay clicking sound from the dash
(not sure if that a cause or effect)
-IT always restarts never any hesitation at all to fire up on the restart
(if i am at highway speed I can just drop in N & it retstarts)
-sometimes if i have a light foot on the petal it might kinda feel like its racing (1000-1500 rpm up/down) but this is by no mean a precursor to a stall
-sometimes the coolant light blinks & the needle will go off the scale
if i restart the it will perform as normal (red herring ?)
Thing I have tried or addressed
-engine grounds done & done again (head, tranny & battery)
-inspected the fcking harness over & over
-dist / hall sender new about 36mths ago ->
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=197074
-afm rebuilt about 12 mths ago
-newer ignition switch 24 mths ago
Any vote for bad idle stabilizer given the odd time i feel racing ?
any keyword search that might bring any others
tried electrical intermittent stall cut out _________________ 89 Westy with TDI AHU 1.9 manual lots of mods

My 83 has a relay in the engine compartment that appeared to be clean but had a cruddy ground which caused exactly what you describe.
After cleanig the ground real good and replacing the connector I've had no problem (knock on wood). _________________ 83 westy |

you mean the black box left side ?
which relay left side main or right side fuel pump ?)
hmm how does the tach show when its the main or the pump ? _________________ 89 Westy with TDI AHU 1.9 manual lots of mods

Mine is an 83AC and does not have a tach. The relay's I'm refering to are mounted toward the front of the engine bay drivers side. It's a double relay with a ground coming off of it and screwed to the firewall next to the relays. All the relays and small 16gauge grounds that I've worked on barely make a good ground from the get go. Be sure to scrape the paint so the connector is fully grounded to the body. These grounds rely on the threads of the screw to complete the circuit which is not reliable. You could spray some paint after the new connector is cleaned and reattatched. _________________ 83 westy |

well this one i solved today the TB idle adjustment screw was backed way out
I think I did this during the winter mths to pick up the idle
so maybe the idle stabilizer is not acting flakey
-I then flipped the main/fuel pump relays
-I also thought I'd just put in my 2nd ecu
well I guess I wait & drive & see if 1 of these might nail the intermittent stall _________________ 89 Westy with TDI AHU 1.9 manual lots of mods
