I'm not sure it's altogether random but still a cool NOS piece and one my daughter mistook for a tea cup years ago haha.
It is an NOS oil filler, Part #211-115-451, which came without the drain/breather tube and used from Motor # 5 870 191 through 8 785 397. I've been slowly assembling NOS parts for my April '62 40hp engine...

Funny you should post that up. What years do those numbers coincide with?
A VW parts shop near me was moving to a warehouse and the owner let me look for NOS stuff. This was in a box marked OEL with a part number 111 115 487. He said it was reinforced as an improvement to prevent cork compression.
Also he had a couple of these random NOS later heater cable clamps.

From what I gather, it would be roughly near the beginning of June '61 through some time in July '64 for 40hp engines. Mine being an April '62, fits right in there and at the time used the round gen stand too. _________________ ,,Wenige Menschen denken, und doch wollen alle entscheiden.'' -der Alte Fritz

Cast parts, especially metal ones used for mass quantity of production, companies need multiple positive or negative molds to produce enough. Thusly each mold is marked.
So if a mold wears down or gets damaged in some way it helps to know which mold has the problem. Otherwise production would have to halt while all molds were inspected for the problem when a mold needed to be fixed or replaced. In your case mold #3 was used to make that part. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I’m not sure how random this is, but it is NOS. A fellow Samba member contacted me after he saw how sorry the one I had was, and offered this one up. This is an NOS split bus heat tube. It is really nice. I can’t wait to put it on my bus.
