It's a type 3 part number - meaning it was used there first right? So yeah Type 3 part. What are you seeing that I'm not? |
I haven't seen that used in a type 3. I've looked in the past but the switches i've seen for the T3 are very different and don't have the winding timer mechanism. It would be hard to use this switch with the way the dash contours .
I could be wrong but i've never seen it in a T3. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Yes Erik is right. Its the same switch used in a buss - 211 and Thing 181. They were however coded different as the wiring looms in each are a bit different even though the switch accomplishes the same thing.
Crofy's switch could of been used on a Type 3 BN2 or a BA4 - most likely the BA4. Ive only seen most BN2 with the simpler push pull type or the complicated bigger clock type.
Here is the Type 3 Switch bay folks think is a 211 only switch as well.
This one Ive only seen on Splits for the early BN4 and B2 heaters.

Its definitely what's used in a bus and Thing. Other than the part designation being 311 I cant find any documentation of its use in a T3. What years and where did you find that documentation? I found it in the T3 parts manual (from vin 318 000 001) but it also said discontinued and to use a 411 part. Which I find confusing since the parts list i'm looking at is 9/69!!! That makes me think it was never used at all or for only a handful of '68 cars.
Of course I could be wrong and I'm only speculating here...
The pic also shows a spacer for the switch and a thinner knob so that it would fit to the dash. I've never seen that either.
The later BN2 looks to have come with a push/pull switch. (the earlier bug version was a pull/push switch mounted to the heater itself)
Wasn't the BA4 a later addition to the Eberspacher line up?

The 311 963 107C switch that I listed is different as it only has 4 male connectors and the thing one pictured below has 6

Thanks for your reply.
I looked at your scans too and all seem to list the switches you pictured. Its pretty weird- as it it also looks like the switch pictured has 6 terminals and not 4. There's also the odd discontinued reference in the parts list.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/bn2_repair_bug_70_72.php
"up to July 1970 rotating switch"
It looks like 9/69 to 7/70 that switch was available on T3 which is weird per my comment about it being discontinued in 69.
Ah, ha! It looks like they both available at the same time.

Documentation will be tough. BA4's on T3's were as far as I know a strictly Canadian thing.
Back in like 1998 I got my first BN2 that ended up in my 62 notchback resto at the time. I got a hold of Eberspacher in Canada to send out manuals at the time. Also California Imports had scans as well for sale. All of which Ive recently handed scans over to Ev. These are complete and not shit house scans of copies of copies from 1986.
Long story short - this is from VW of Canada AFAIK.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/bn2_repair_bug_70_72.php
Look in the Heater/Air Con section for all the BN2 stuff I have. Its also on my FB page.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/bn2_repair_bug_70_72.php
So in that manual is this. Hope that helps.

All the 181 ones I have are four wire plugs with 6 male posts available. None are using all the terminals.
Im sure this has something to do with the night glow of the switch like the Hazard. Like the pic above - see the red/white stripe - it is for the glow light for night. I dont know if Later T3's had that?
Keep in mind on a T3, any timer switch was an accessory to an accessory. On any Eberspacher set up for the most part there was always an upgrade switch. _________________

Here is another good example of PN cross overs. Brand new NOS 1972 BN4 for a Bus. Look at the switch it came with.

I don't think so unfortunately. Just one more reason showing the vast superiority of the bay window bus _________________
