Hello,
Re Type 2, Type 4 interchangeability,
Can anyone advise me regarding the 1983 æCUÆ 1970cc flat motor I have installed in my 73 Westy?
I have a major exhaust leak into the heat exchanger and into the cabin when the heater is turned on.
I have the option of buying a 1970Æs æZÆ 1679cc flat motor from a type 4, 411L Automatic Variant æas isÆ (not in going order) as a spare and using the heat exchangers from that, this also uses different motor fan cases to help heater air? Will the exchangers and the fan cases fit?
Would the heads be the same, square or round ports?
Any ideas?
Has any one opened up the heat exchangers and had the aluminium/magnesium fins welded?
Regards,
Ralph |

The heads and the fan housing would be different on the type 4 motor from the 411. You would be able to install it into your Bus, but you would need an entirely different exhaust. I have a set of Vanagon heater boxes you emailed me about....let me know if you want them...they would be a direct bolt on and much less hassle than changing out the motor. |

Vwlover is right, if he has the box(es) you need it would be much easier.
trying to open up an old box and repair it is a sketchy proposition... |
