I own an '87 without and a '91 with. I can tell no discernible difference between the two as it relates to wind noise. Given my experience, if I found a set of these at the junkyard I probably wouldn't go to the time and trouble to get them off the donor van and then onto mine.

When I did the window out repaint of my Westy, I added these rubber strips. I simply bend the taps of the metal frame to fit the door mounting frame that do not have the bumps. I think the bumps are there to make putting in the screws easier. At the same time, I put " Peel-N-Seal " every where. Now my Westy is much quieter than my tin top but I don't know what percentage the rubber strips at the doors lower the noise. IMHO, the VW engineer did not put in these rubber seal just for kicks. They have their reasons.

Does anyone have any pics of this project to share? specifically, of the cheap ebay solution? but also of the stock solution. For many of us, it's hard to find vans in junkyards, and an aftermarket solution would be great, if it works!

I already did that, and I still have pretty bad wind noise coming from my drivers side.

I don't go fast enough to create wind noise, beyond my own. . . . 😎

I fitted the lower door seals to my 86 about 3 years ago. In the interest of being thorough, I documented
db readings before and after. (Cheap/free phone app, nothing anywhere near real serious…)

IIRC, it showed 2db reduction in road noise. Certainly measurable, but in retrospect not what I’d consider
really effective for the money & effort put into the project. YMMV… <shrug>

Yes, I took the doors off, supported on a shop stool allowed me room to work & keep speaker wiring in place.

Pics? FWIW…I took only one after the fact:

Well, funny this thread resurfaced, these wind block seals are presenting a bit of a delemnia for my repaint of my 90.

I see no easy way to remove them, they are nearly impossible to mask.

They are going to involve removing the doors, remove the seals, install the doors, spray the Van, remove the doors, install the seals and reinstall the doors!

Heavy Sigh........

You could shoot the doors while off the van. Depends on how far into a full respray you're willing to go Wink .

Funny you ask...... I'm not doing a full respray....... just a face lift is all for a tired old girl.

I've already begun taking the doors and weatherstrip off.

I'm now waiting for my son-in-law to arrive for dinner ...... little does he know..... heh heh heh....

The upper weatherstrip is simply glued to the door window frame ......

The lower ones need fasteners removed, I've got everything loose and ready to pull upon his arrival.......

I took off the lower rubber seals on the front doors.

I had a helper steady the door as I unbolted it and popped the door check pin.

I propped the door on a 5 gallon bucket with a piece of wood on top.

I then pulled the four hex bolts out.

The hardest part was getting the door bolted back in the exact same spot but we got it done.

In this photo you can see the four mounting points, my socket is on the lower bolt...... all four mounting points have a raised biss to mount to.

VW was serious about this noise reduction piece, they changed the "A" Pillar stamp design in order to install them.

I was cleaning up and started looking at the wind seals I had removed.
Upon closer inspection I could have simply grasped to top of the rubber seal and slid it up and out of the track!

Live and learn..........
